Sorry but you were played by El Al. El Al probably waited to reveal their solutions in order that anyone hesitating about keeping the tickets should cancel before the 24 hr period granted by online booking sites.

Well not 1 of them was for me personally. It was for my visitors.
But God was nice to me, by allowing me to fly yesterday in Biz direct, oneway for 1/10th of what these tickets cost. But that's not for here or now

I don't believe anyone knows for sure but there is talk that perhaps ELAL may allow a date change within a few days here or there if upgrading to a direct flight. Guess well know more next week.

Does elal have any flight tlv-NYC that have a stopover in a European country? Can I upgrade to elal and request a long stopover there if such a flight exists?

My exact idea! Though I suppose we won't know until next week. I have a feeling they won't be too thrilled with the idea but it would be nice if we could work that out somehow.

AFAIK Elal doesn't (and can't) operate any flights between US and Europe since they are an Israeli carrier. The carrier on any flight to or from the US has to be either a US carrier or the carrier of the location they're flying too.
Am I right? Or is this a mistaken assumption I have?

No, they can't. The same way Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, BA don't fly from LAX-EWR.

I believe they "could" if it's on the way to their destination. Just like Cathay pacific does JFK-Vancouver. And qantas Does lax-jfk. Though I'm pretty sure you can't buy tickets just for those legs as they need to be connected with Asia and Australia

AFAIK thats 90% Correct- the exceptions are routes that stop en-route like Singapore Airlines JFK-FRA (which is really en-route to SIN but can be booked) Also CX JFK-YVR (en-route to HKG) etc...
