Sometimes they'll make you gate check your carry-on. Best is to have another small bag inside the carry-on to put in the must important stuff in case they make you gate check.

i thought that i left them in lkwd i cheacked my backpack three times when i went through securtity to get from the club to my gate the lady tells me she has to search my bag and rescan it she then pulles ut my tefelin

In the US, you are expected to tip everyone for everything. If someone holds the door open for you, they are probably expecting a tip (exaggeration, I know, but you get the point). Everywhere else, tips are appreciated, but you won't get angry looks or even rebukes for not tipping...
