Things To Do In Israel Master Thread
« on: March 15, 2010, 11:35:57 PM »
For some, this topic may be a given. For others, i think it could be really helpful.

I haven't been in Israel for quite a few years since my yeshiva days and am finally headed back for a vacation with the wife and a toddler.

We have pretty much everything set up except the "what to do, where to go" aspect.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, we'd love to hear them and im sure others on the forum would too.

From places to go, things to go, places to eat, places to avoid, lets hear em all...

I actually saw those already and found them quite useful. We already have the tickets, the car, and a place to stay. Im looking for tips on cities to visit, places to go see, restaurants worth a visit to etc...

These are some of my favorite dishes that I had in Israel:
-Philly Steak Sandwich at Cafe Rimon fleishig is ridiculously good (74NIS)
-"Homemade" burger at Burgers Bar. Don't miss the chimichuri, pesto, and chili sauces! (30NIS)
-Belgian waffles with caramel and white chocolate sauce and ice cream at Cafe Rimon milchig (25NIS)

In Tel Aviv "Alternative" was a milchig restaurant had some a prix fixe menu for dinner before 6pm that gave a Ben & Jerry's milkshake, soup, entree, and dessert for about 50NIS and was incredible.  I don't know if that is a permanent special of not. Their Creme Brulee was the best I ever had and is an absolute must!!!!

Caffe C in Tiverya is very good.
Felafel Tritto in Tzfat is cheap and delicious, stuffed with lots of felafel, fried eggplant, and french fries for 10NIS.

And as I only eat Cholov Yisroel and rarely get good Ice Cream in the US eating as much ice cream as possible in Israel in an obsession.
In Tiverya it was easier to find Cholov Yisroel Ben & Jerry's pints than it was elsewhere.

Go to Papagayo in Talpiot
It has a mehadrin hechsher and is unreal. Their meats beat alot of american fancy restaurants.
For 179 you get all you can eat. They will serve you 7 diffrent type of meats (2 amazing steaks) after you tried all 7 you can tell them which ones you liked and have as much as you want. Its really amazing. Forget about el gaucho in Ramat Gan, this is the real deal!!!

We loved both the Dairy and Meat restaurants of Cafe Rimon. I dont remember the exact dishes but whatever we had we loved.

Also in Ben Yehuda you must go to the "FroYo" place I think it is actually called "Katzefet" Awesome ice cream of all kinds and you must have the FroYo which is a block of frozen yogurt ice cream plus a bar of all different frozen fruits, nuts, candy, chocolate, cookies etc... that you get to choose what you want inside and they blend it all with the ice cream! There are alot of imitations popping up in the states but I believe they are the one to beat. My favorite choice is Strawberry, Pineapple, Glazed pecans and chocolate.
They also have a guy making crepes out front where you can choose sauces and toppings to coat it with, it is fun watching him make them and they are also verrry good.

Sherry's in Tiveria is a great milchig place right near the boardwalk.

+1 on both Cafe Rimon's and Katzefet.
I got a froyo with fruits, white chocolate, dark chocolate, cookies, etc.
Plus you can then top it off at the self-serve station with chocolate syrup, caramel syrup, and sprinkles.

Sherry's in Tiverya was not bad, but Caffe C was significantly better.
