Ashkelon is a nice chilled out place to go to, but I'd prefer going during the week.

perfectly normal & safe, it's an easy route,
Instead of taking a left into the old city take the next right to talpiot & just continue straight down till kever rachel, you can't miss it

I know a guy the ended p in middle of a real ghetto arab village taking waze to Beitar. I wouldn't say it's perfectly normal and safe. Get a general idea of the directions, don't just rely on waze

Very safe to drive there from Yerushalayim.  Go straight from Talpiyot on Derech Hevron. You really cannot miss it.

neighbor just told me he did it. Was a bit more expensive bit he said worth it. He came to late in the evening to start getting groceries.
it ends up coming out cheaper in the long run since you only buy what you need
