Thanks! Have you ever taken this tour? Do they have a political spin or it's straight history? (I recognize that even straight history is usually some sort of spin)

Yes. No, I don't recall them speaking anything else except for history.

I meant a political spin on history, in the same way Shavuos has become a purely agricultural holiday, for example

I understood your question. I was there a while ago. AFAIR they basically speak about the history and details about the place.

That's not so new. It's at least a month or two old.

Ir Dovid  (City of David) Trip Report -

Tickets are 29 + 13 (shekel) for a self guided Tour and the 3D Movie

OR

60 or 56 ( if you book online) for a Guided Tour - check online for the Tour Times. It is best if you book a tour online especially during the high peak times like in the Summer. Usually you are fine if you book a the night before or the day of.

I took the guided tour and it was nice, but not so necessary. I ended up skipping ahead and for some parts it is probably best to do. ( see below)
The tour starts off with a 3D film about what the Ir Dovid is all about. Then they go around the city showing you a bunch of things and telling you some history, however most of it was on the signs, and if you take the tour be prepared to have a lot of patience. The site is still being excavated and there is still a lot they don't know yet.

The highlight of the Tour was the water part, (Ch)Hezekiah's Tunnel which they take you down very steep steps and eventually you walk  through water that is ankle deep but a for a little is almost waist deep. This tunnel is about .3 - .5 of a mile long. It also pitch black, no lights you need to bring flash lights. It can take a good half hour to walk through. It is very narrow just the size for an regular person to fit through. If you are going with a tour you want to jump ahead (at least a good few minutes) a get some "free time" in the tunnel. The tunnel was  a lot of fun but not if you are walking behind tons of people. Eventually the tunnel ends and you come out into a pool of water which kids can play in, take pictures etc...
After the pool you walk up steps and you have two options one- take a shuttle back to the top of Ir Dovid - costs 5 shekel or, two- walk up a pretty steep hill - it takes around 5 - 10 minutes for the average person. There are Jewish people living in Ir Dovid and you are walking through  as semi-regular city street, however on the other side of the street you can look down and see an Arab Neighborhood - nothing to be scared about since there are plenty of people around plus there is big fence and (probably)cameras.
