the bullet museum/factory is a great trip (as recommended on this thread) - it only has become more well known recently. its enjoyable for both adults and kids (not very little ones, but kids who are old enough to understand what bullets and a factory are, etc). the whole tour takes 1- 1 1/2 hours. its located in rehovot. the person who answered the phone there gave us incorrect directions so we came 15 minutes late but they let us join anyway and we watched the movie at the end instead of at the beginning. (our tour guide's name was dina, she was really great and I think it makes a big difference which tour guide you get).  if you google/put into your gps the street "haim holtsman" you'll get to the right place and then just follow the brown signs for 'ayalon institute' from there.

Was just in Ein Farra - Ein Mabu'a. Gorgeous place, nice crowd, mostly dati and charedi, a few cousins. Unbelievable scenery. It is great for the entire family. You can walk through the stream or alongside. Last time I was there (2 days ago) I barely got my feet wet, today went through the stream, amazing place! Very relaxing!

It could be at non-peak times there are more foxes and less family.

Re. Places to eat, this is a famous spot for shwarma, people swear by this place that they've got the best shwarma on planet earth.

It's at the gas station right at the exit/entrance to Bnei Brak (near the coca cola factory?).

What does a family of 9 do that would like to have a Hoffman Tour (or the like) experience but can't afford $55 x 9 for a simple tour. I would even do one of them if it was the "must do", but they have 12 and wouldn't know where to start. Any suggestions?

Don't know anything about them but i'm sure if you contacted them they would give you a group rate and recommendations of which tour to take.

It may be reasonable to hire a driver with a van/minibus. I could give you a recommendation, PM me.

Or rent a vehicle and hire a driver.
