I don't remember if you are going with easy jet or not, but from what I remember/think the small spirit type of airlines (easy jet, Ryanair) will make you crazy with your dimensions and the big time airlines will be more ymmv (I only flew easy jet so the rest is my opinion)
Ended up not taking any small name airlines. Will be flying J on all flights except 2, so I first wanted to confirm that J will provide me with the benefit of not being so crazy with carryon sizes.

I have 2 non-J flights: VCE-ZRH-FCO which is UA on LX metal. I have a UMPE (although I didn't pay with it - have to see whether just having the cc is good enough), so hopefully I could check it for free in case they don't allow it. My other non J is CLT-EWR which is BA on US metal. I have AA cc so I could try to switch my FFN to the AA one as Dan suggests in the BA knowledgebase to secure free bag in case they don't allow it.

M'Inyan L'Inyan M'oisoi I'nyan....
I was on a flight where my bags were weighted at 3 lbs over. I went over to another counter with the same bag and it was 2 lbs under. Sometimes it's worth trying another counter.

Thought there was a more current carryon thread, but couldn't find it...

I see that it's YMMV with getting a carryon onto the plane that's an inch too big this way, but 4 inches small enough that way etc., but does flying in J get you better carryon privileges?
Yes, some airlines allow you bigger carry on's in J.  GIYF  :P

IIRC LOT and LH allowed me. Google the other Airlines.

When do they charge you for your carry-on weighs to much?
Im flying budget airlines in europe and would like not to pay extra on all the flights.
If I have someone watch it on the side till I check in will that work?

Thanks, I guess the worst case is that they check it. Flying J definitely gets me a free bag.

From reading the sites info (Ryannair, Wizzair, etc.) they seem pretty strict with sizes and weights. If I remember reading somewhere correcty, they measure the bags again at boarding, so leaving it on the side might not work. Try to find reviews online to see about that.

Is air france strict on carry-ons?
What's the chances of me getting through with a carry-on wheelie, suitbag, hatbox, And guitar?

Baggage items exceeding 32 kg / 70 lb in weight or 300 cm / 118 in in length cannot be transported in the hold, except for:
pole vaulting poles,
audio or video equipment,
heavy musical instruments.

and??
If you were referring to the guitar, I have taken it on many flights along with a carry-on and hatbox without getting glanced at.
but from what I understand from online, airfrance seems to be very  strict, also in weighing carry-ons which in my case are almost 40 pounds

Guys... carry on dimensions have more to do with the airport than with the airline. Outside the US check in staff are from the airport not the airline.
