There are really 2 parts to the question.

1. Does it work at all on that route? (meaning do the check in agents realize how you became a displaced business passenger and are familiar with that shtick - and therefore don't put you under pr-1 status)

2. If it does work - Is mid-january considered a busy time for this route in business, lowering the chances of an available business seat?

1. Yes it works.
2. Only takes 1 open seat for you to clear.

now I don't know where to post this next question, but since it's free, I'm going to book a "stopover" back to LAX for use in the spring. More than 21 days prior to that flight, can I change that date for free?

and does the above plan still work together with Plan B?
