Click on "United air travel award rules:"
"You may redeem miles for travel in United Global FirstSM, United First®, United Business® or United BusinessFirst® , even if the space is not available. In these cases, United Economy in the same award type must be confirmed, and the front cabin will be waitlisted. For example, a Saver United First award must be confirmed in Saver United Economy to be eligible for waitlisting. If the courtesy waitlist does not clear, it will expire 24 hours before itinerary departure, and you will automatically be added to the airport upgrade standby list upon check-in. In these cases, you will be confirmed on a space-available basis by a United airport representative at the gate once the flight has closed for check-in. For United BusinessFirst and United Business travel awards, the difference in miles will be refunded when the United BusinessFirst or United Business class segment of the trip could not be confirmed. Waitlist requests may only be made over the phone with your local United Reservations office"

is there rhyme or reason to when united releases more seats, or just check every day?
Check multiple times a day.
now I don't know where to post this next question, but since it's free, I'm going to book a "stopover" back to LAX for use in the spring.  More than 21 days prior to that flight, can I change that date for free?

and does the above plan still work together with Plan B?
Not sure you can backtrack.

You can't book a stop over on a one way.

Backtrack?

I want to go EWR - HNL and back in November, EWR - LAX in March, let's say. United prices this the same as EWR - HNL roundtrip, I just need to know how important it is to get the EWR-LAX date right... or if I can change it later.

If you can do it, the date change would require you to pay money. However, there will likely be a schedule change which may allow you to change for free.

Does Singapore also allow the "stopover" if booking on United?
I assume Plan B doesn't work through them, though?

Yes. Will probably get changed a few minutes at a time. You can usually parlay that into a date change.

Stopover is only if you book RT using UA miles.

So book the roundtrip with stopover with UA miles plan B; worst case don't take the stopover and other than the gamble on possibly having to fly economy all the way to HNL, no loss.
Thanks!

Right. Just confirming the stopover can be done without Plan B.

I set up a plan B back in February. It was showing the "Fare Class: X" and "requested class: I" (next to it) up until yesterday. This is what I believe it is supposed to show for Plan B.

Now today, each flight is showing in the reservation twice, once as Fare Class X (with no requested line), and then a second time below with "Fare Class: I" and "This flight segment is waitlisted".

The miles deducted is still the full business amount. The itinerary starts on Monday the 26th, so I'm getting nervous here. Why did it change? Does it matter?

You're fine. Sometimes the system displays it this way.

Great, thanks for the quick reply. It's an elusive LAX - MEL itenerary; there's still 8 seats available so I'm starting to get my hopes up about it clearing on the day of.
