Click on "United air travel award rules:"
"You may redeem miles for travel in United Global FirstSM, United First®, United Business® or United BusinessFirst® , even if the space is not available. In these cases, United Economy in the same award type must be confirmed, and the front cabin will be waitlisted. For example, a Saver United First award must be confirmed in Saver United Economy to be eligible for waitlisting. If the courtesy waitlist does not clear, it will expire 24 hours before itinerary departure, and you will automatically be added to the airport upgrade standby list upon check-in. In these cases, you will be confirmed on a space-available basis by a United airport representative at the gate once the flight has closed for check-in. For United BusinessFirst and United Business travel awards, the difference in miles will be refunded when the United BusinessFirst or United Business class segment of the trip could not be confirmed. Waitlist requests may only be made over the phone with your local United Reservations office"

Still on the fence about booking the Plan B for EWR-HNL due to the potential 10 hour ride in economy...  I know Dan says everybody gets it on the TLV routes, but does any data exist on how often it does / doesn't work for this route?
Do you get upgraded only if saver award space opens up, or do you get upgraded as soon as they open up the business class seats for upgrades in general, but there doesn't have to be award space?

Dan says what about the TLV route?

What's your alternative? Stop in LAX/SFO/PHX/PDX/SEA?

Dan says everybody he knows who books the Plan B ends up getting upgraded.

Well unless you want to vacation on Oahu you don't have a choice.

WTH is the difference? I don't see any benefit to stopping in HNL unless you just want to be in J, but if that's not guaranteed (I don't know how likely it is to be successful using Plan B) then why bother? There are many more options if you'd stop somewhere else.

Feels different to me to break up your flight midway, rather than at the end.

Although to be honest, I didn't realize you could fly directly to OGG from parts of the West Coast; I thought it was a small regional airport.  Probably shouldn't admit that on this forum....

You can fly from OGG to many cities that aren't on the West Coast also.

So why would you even consider flying with a stop in HNL with AS, AA, DL, UA and now VX all offering non-stop flights to OGG?

Regrettably, I now live on the east coast and am looking to fly from there
Was just noting that not everybody on the east coast thinks it's the center of the world.
I don't have a lot of days and want to make the traveling as short as possible. I think ewr-hnl-ogg works out to be the shortest.

You can get upgraded in 2 ways.
1) If savor business space opens.
2) by getting pr1 status when you check in which puts you on the top of the waitlist and if there's any business seats available, you'll be upgraded.
