"You may redeem miles for travel in United Global FirstSM, United First®, United Business® or United BusinessFirst® , even if the space is not available. In these cases, United Economy in the same award type must be confirmed, and the front cabin will be waitlisted. For example, a Saver United First award must be confirmed in Saver United Economy to be eligible for waitlisting. If the courtesy waitlist does not clear, it will expire 24 hours before itinerary departure, and you will automatically be added to the airport upgrade standby list upon check-in. In these cases, you will be confirmed on a space-available basis by a United airport representative at the gate once the flight has closed for check-in. For United BusinessFirst and United Business travel awards, the difference in miles will be refunded when the United BusinessFirst or United Business class segment of the trip could not be confirmed. Waitlist requests may only be made over the phone with your local United Reservations office"

I've seen awards being exchanged lets say from 80k to 70k (from partner award to UA metal) and the receipt got updates with new tkt number but still said 80k.

BTW, I've had success lately doing plan B via an economy standard award. Shesh.

But if it doesn't clear, you're stuck paying for a standard economy award.

Whats the odds of getting a plan b when there are only 4 seats available (on the seat map) ewr to tlv?
Any options for the way back when seat map showing 15 seats but no saver award available?

Depends on how far out. Things change and more seats may open up.

Seat map doesn't mean much. How many seats are available for sale when you look on expert mode?

Seat map as D93 said doesn't mean much but it does give you hope. Meaning, 2 seats are for sure available as you can see on expert mode but the other 2 seats may be on hold by a TA who may end up not booking it. If you say that there was R class available though it is more likely that someone's upgrade cleared and he just didn't select a seat yet. In any event Motzei Shabbos flight is not likely to change much... Its a flight that people book a lot.

Is I class and R class requested essentially the same thing?

No. For Plan B you need I class. R class ain't going to help you.

Although R class usually shows up within 24 hours of the flight if you don't automatically get booked in J.

Yah, for some reason. But even R class becomes available you won't be able to get the tkt reissued unless there is I available as well. Only the airport can clear you in R T-24 (and they can clear you even R is not available) but they won't usually do it until after check-in time has closed and there are still seats available.

Bekutzir, for Plan B to work in advance you need I class available. In the airport as long there is a seat available and you're on the waitlist you'll get it no need for R class

SO R class is irrelevant.

I = Saver award bucket. R = Upgrade space bucket.

In a plan B the R bucket is as relevant as the J/C/D/Z/P bucket. It has nothing to do with you and whoever is waitlisted with a GPU will clear before you. All you need is saver business award.
