"You may redeem miles for travel in United Global FirstSM, United First®, United Business® or United BusinessFirst® , even if the space is not available. In these cases, United Economy in the same award type must be confirmed, and the front cabin will be waitlisted. For example, a Saver United First award must be confirmed in Saver United Economy to be eligible for waitlisting. If the courtesy waitlist does not clear, it will expire 24 hours before itinerary departure, and you will automatically be added to the airport upgrade standby list upon check-in. In these cases, you will be confirmed on a space-available basis by a United airport representative at the gate once the flight has closed for check-in. For United BusinessFirst and United Business travel awards, the difference in miles will be refunded when the United BusinessFirst or United Business class segment of the trip could not be confirmed. Waitlist requests may only be made over the phone with your local United Reservations office"

Thanks Dan, will do and will report back.

I guess there's nothing I can do about getting those points back into my Chase account...

Thank you to efflpetzel and Dan for the assistance!

It took 80 minutes on the phone, where they accidentally re-issued the ticket as Economy Saver, and then had to re-issue another time to get it back to Business Saver.  But I'm back to being XN waitlisted for I, with 25k miles deposited back into my account.

Many many many thanks!

Does anyone know whether the expert mode availability gives any insight into predicting the success of a Plan B? This is what I'm seeing right now.

Nope. Though look how many seats are still open. Not that you'll get a clear answer, but at least you'll see whether or not it's likely (meaning, if there are already barely any seats left, chances of you're upgrade probably aren't as good compared to when there are a lot of seats still open).

Sorry to have to do this, but exactly the opposite :P

Seat map isn't as good of an indicator as seats for sale (shown in expert mode). The more seats for sale the better chances of a plan b success.

Ah, I read his answer to mean exactly what you said, I thought he was using "seats" as shorthand for the EM availability I posted.

I guess we'll find out.

Is this still the current info to cite to an agent to get PR-1, err, 1.5?

Side point – expert mode is working for you? Still not coming up for me...

I used the workaround. Not sure how accurate it is, but it shows up.

So based on that, my chances are pretty good?

Yup.
Great. Because I started getting worried since there are only 13 seats available when I looked at the seat map. As of now, Mrs. CS91 is in J and I'm in Y. Wonder who would take the kid if things remain as they are now.  ::)

So I have a Plan B set up right now that goes AMS-IAH-LAX.

There was something askew in the reservation so I called in today, and they fixed it, but then they also advised me to be careful because if I get moved up to BF on the IAH-LAX leg, I will not be able to get the refund.

I had understood that moving up for only one leg hurt me only on the overwater portion, i.e. AMS-IAH.

Was the agent wrong or did I misunderstand on the Plan B? She suggested I may prefer to be waitlisted for I for only the AMS-IAH portion and then ask to be waitlisted for the rest if/when I get moved up.

Thoughts?

Ok, so I don't have to worry that there may be notes on this reservation that state I was warned that if I fly the domestic portion in BF, I won't get a refund?

Something hinky is going on with my reservation. I logged in today and got a message that they switched my plane type for the domestic portion, and was asked to confirm. But the segments now appear divided up instead of just XN - waitlisted for I.  No matter how many times I click to confirm I still get asked to do it again, and I can't see the seat map anymore. See attached. Thoughts, anyone?
