Click on "United air travel award rules:"
"You may redeem miles for travel in United Global FirstSM, United First®, United Business® or United BusinessFirst® , even if the space is not available. In these cases, United Economy in the same award type must be confirmed, and the front cabin will be waitlisted. For example, a Saver United First award must be confirmed in Saver United Economy to be eligible for waitlisting. If the courtesy waitlist does not clear, it will expire 24 hours before itinerary departure, and you will automatically be added to the airport upgrade standby list upon check-in. In these cases, you will be confirmed on a space-available basis by a United airport representative at the gate once the flight has closed for check-in. For United BusinessFirst and United Business travel awards, the difference in miles will be refunded when the United BusinessFirst or United Business class segment of the trip could not be confirmed. Waitlist requests may only be made over the phone with your local United Reservations office"

TYVM Solma... got an agent to do it on the 4th call.  She had to consult someone on HOW to do it and it took nearly an hour but they called me back.  Also, it doesn't appear that the additional points were deducted though the agent said they were.  The booking says the required "I class requested."  Now I wait...

Confirming a Standard Award and waitlisting for a Saver Award is not permitted.

If I plan B to First class but only BusinessFirst has availability, can I ask to be placed in BusinessFirst? Anyone do this successfully?

Has anyone had luck with UA calling the airport on your behalf to PR-1?

Can plan B be done if someone doesn't have a united card? (meaning if the flight is open with a united card but unavail if I dont have one) I am looking at EWR-TLV on 12/28. There is standard business award but not saver.

{partial repost}
Trying to fly NYC to HNL in Jan.
United has saver economy available. 22.5K each way.
JFK to HNL There's no business class listed. First class saver would be 40K - not available on the non-stop.
HNL to JFK Business saver would be 40K - not available on the nonstop.
Can I do a Plan B? Even though it's for 1st OW and biz the other way?
(To review- I pay 40K each way, but get seated in economy, with a "I (or ?) class requested")

Go somewhere closer.
He has a business conference there that week.
But maybe he'll take your recommendation to stay longer.  He hates having Shabbos at a 'vacation' spot.

NOOb question.  If I want to do Plan B from BWI-EWR-YVR, and the BWI-EWR doesn't even have premium cabin, can the EWR-YVR leg still clear at the airport?  Does it matter that EWR-YVR is operated by AC?

Its a trick question because you should be flying CX JFK-YVR.

(Also planB only works on UA metal)

I got the UA metal thing.  Shame.  I may fly CX back, but there's no availability outbound, bad flight times, and I had a horrible experience in CX J last time I flew it.

Trying to go to Hawaii at the end of Jan.  Saver fare available in economy but not in business.
I tried calling to set up Plan B.  The Indian guy had no clue. I HU.  But couldn't get myself to CA for a while.
I carefully read http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/38212
(United Plan B: Pretty Much The Most Awesome, Underutilized, And Underappreciated Thing Ever.  from Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014, 3:39 pm )

I used the call center he recommended. When an Indian guy answered, I thought - here we go again!  But as soon as I start with, "I would like you to debit the amount of miles needed for saver business, but seat me in saver coach," he said, "sure, it will have to be done manually." and I knew I had a chance.
I was on hold for a while, with him checking up on me every once in a while.  But it's done! I hope I actually get a biz seat, but I'm on a high for having got this far.

Nice! I hope you learned your lesson here: Just because someone has an Indian accent doesn't mean they aren't knowledgeable.
