Click on "United air travel award rules:"
"You may redeem miles for travel in United Global FirstSM, United First®, United Business® or United BusinessFirst® , even if the space is not available. In these cases, United Economy in the same award type must be confirmed, and the front cabin will be waitlisted. For example, a Saver United First award must be confirmed in Saver United Economy to be eligible for waitlisting. If the courtesy waitlist does not clear, it will expire 24 hours before itinerary departure, and you will automatically be added to the airport upgrade standby list upon check-in. In these cases, you will be confirmed on a space-available basis by a United airport representative at the gate once the flight has closed for check-in. For United BusinessFirst and United Business travel awards, the difference in miles will be refunded when the United BusinessFirst or United Business class segment of the trip could not be confirmed. Waitlist requests may only be made over the phone with your local United Reservations office"

So final part of story is gate agent said they can't touch mileage ticket and I have to call the mileage plus line. So I called it again. Spoke for 2 seconds and was put on hold. Couldn't hear  what they said. Few minutes later she comes back on and says OK she is going to speak to her supervisor and put me back in business. On hold for another 20 minutes. Gate agent waited to give out the last upgrade. As they start boarding she comes back on and says it's done. Gate agent prints out my new ticket. And I publicly thank hashem.

But as mentioned above, does plan B need to booked initially? Or can you book economy and then try to upgrade with plan B

no clue. maybe bec i didnt book it as a plan b fro the beginning. dont know what changed

I have 2 booked saver economy awards using 45K Aeroplan miles on a United flight from Auckland-NYC.
Is it worth re-booking using Chase points through United to try to get 2 seats next to each other in  business class. There are currently 29/60 seats available for a mid-January flight, but only 4 pairs of seats together. I'd be cancelling the original flights for a $200 fee and the 90K Aeroplan points would be refunded.

Is there a high success rate? I don't want it to fall through and then have points stuck in United and Aeroplan after transferring them from Chase and Amex.

Do I have to cancel on Aeroplan before booking through United to avoid having 2 tickets in our names?

I set this up with an agent and my reservation now says "Fare Class: United Economy (X) - (I class requested)" but I don't see the miles being deducted. Does it take time? Does it mean it wasn't properly setup?
