Click on "United air travel award rules:"
"You may redeem miles for travel in United Global FirstSM, United First®, United Business® or United BusinessFirst® , even if the space is not available. In these cases, United Economy in the same award type must be confirmed, and the front cabin will be waitlisted. For example, a Saver United First award must be confirmed in Saver United Economy to be eligible for waitlisting. If the courtesy waitlist does not clear, it will expire 24 hours before itinerary departure, and you will automatically be added to the airport upgrade standby list upon check-in. In these cases, you will be confirmed on a space-available basis by a United airport representative at the gate once the flight has closed for check-in. For United BusinessFirst and United Business travel awards, the difference in miles will be refunded when the United BusinessFirst or United Business class segment of the trip could not be confirmed. Waitlist requests may only be made over the phone with your local United Reservations office"

Flight is in about 2 hours...

How do we know? What do we do? Receipt says X for booking class and 78,000 miles charged.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Not that I could see. But BH was put on standby list at check in and cleared. However they did charge her 2nd bag fee at check in because she was only confirmed in economy.

There are other exceptions, some of which are not anyone would wish for.

Hi,

Apologies if this is the wrong thread - would greatly appreciate if you could put it somewhere it might be seen. Unfortunately several of my family members must fly to Israel ASAP for a kevurah (body is currently in US but will be leaving soon). They would prefer to fly with the body (which will be on United), and I'm doing everything I can to figure out a way to get them on the plane.

United is asking 90k miles roundtrip, but they only have Amex points, though quite a few (295k). Is there anyway for me to transfer them to United, or any other workaround? Cash flights are around $1500 currently so desperately trying to find another option for them.

Any options you could suggest would be incredibly appreciated. (Even if you could suggest a workaround for a different flight in case we can't get anything for United, I'd be grateful). I'm scrambling here.

Thank you all so much and may you only know simchas.

Ames doesn’t transfer to United, but you can transfer Amex to Aeroplan and book United flight with Aeroplan points.
