Click on "United air travel award rules:"
"You may redeem miles for travel in United Global FirstSM, United First®, United Business® or United BusinessFirst® , even if the space is not available. In these cases, United Economy in the same award type must be confirmed, and the front cabin will be waitlisted. For example, a Saver United First award must be confirmed in Saver United Economy to be eligible for waitlisting. If the courtesy waitlist does not clear, it will expire 24 hours before itinerary departure, and you will automatically be added to the airport upgrade standby list upon check-in. In these cases, you will be confirmed on a space-available basis by a United airport representative at the gate once the flight has closed for check-in. For United BusinessFirst and United Business travel awards, the difference in miles will be refunded when the United BusinessFirst or United Business class segment of the trip could not be confirmed. Waitlist requests may only be made over the phone with your local United Reservations office"

The question is we don't know what to try 🤣. It seems that he just got pure luck for asking one thing and getting an other thing .

Yes during pandemic I did via chat, took forever but was setup correctly and cleared days before flight because it was covid and available. This seems like a mistake/mazal.

Depends how far out the travel date is.
I think if they do it manually, most reps won't charge the added 3k surcharge nonsense that they added lately.

I may be wrong, though, no recent experience.

I did plan B for a flight JNB to EWR. They deducted 70k miles  but on the email receipt it says under method of payment "miscellaneous document" it does not say 70k miles.

Is this done correctly?

After lots of HUCA, no agent will do it for me. They're insisting that I need to book the X class first and only then can they deduct the miles for confirmed I wait list. Can I do it that way?

Sure.

Is it harder that way? Because in the DDMS post you seem to say not to do that

True.

Also does confirmed wait-list still get PR1 status?  Comments on DDMS seem to say otherwise?

I'm not even sure that designation is still called PR1. People need to share more DPs here :)
