"You may redeem miles for travel in United Global FirstSM, United First®, United Business® or United BusinessFirst® , even if the space is not available. In these cases, United Economy in the same award type must be confirmed, and the front cabin will be waitlisted. For example, a Saver United First award must be confirmed in Saver United Economy to be eligible for waitlisting. If the courtesy waitlist does not clear, it will expire 24 hours before itinerary departure, and you will automatically be added to the airport upgrade standby list upon check-in. In these cases, you will be confirmed on a space-available basis by a United airport representative at the gate once the flight has closed for check-in. For United BusinessFirst and United Business travel awards, the difference in miles will be refunded when the United BusinessFirst or United Business class segment of the trip could not be confirmed. Waitlist requests may only be made over the phone with your local United Reservations office"

After lots of HUCA, no agent will do it for me. They're insisting that I need to book the X class first and only then can they deduct the miles for confirmed I wait list. Can I do it that way?

Finally got someone to do it. Looks like there are 29 people in front of me on the upgrade list with 6 seats available in J. Theoretically do I get placed at the front of the line at check in/gate? Or no shot.

If it has no chance of clearing I'd do a different flight because this one is jammed.

Assuming no tricks, is there a tracker available to alert me when/if X award space becomes available on the flight I'm interested in?

I'm not even sure that designation is still called PR1. People need to share more DPs here :)

I have a united award from SE Asia to EWR via TYO. The first leg is on ANA and the second is on UA.

The UA leg is booked as XN.

Can I do plan B for just the second leg? How many miles should business saver be for this flight?
120 characters? Hmm, I wonder what I could write with 64 characters. Boy, it's gonna be hard to use up 15 characters. W-

Whatever it's called good luck getting an agent to put you on the list at check in. I forgot how unbelievably incompetent EWR agents are.

Worst in the entire UA system, by a long shot.

Don't get me started about this. I can write a book with the horror stories dealing with UA agents at EWR.

For me, the biggest benefit of having UA Club access thru the CC, is getting competent assistance from the agents in the EWR club. And even that is nothing to write home about.

Why is that? And what can be done about it?

I just assume it's the general NYC attitude of not wanting to help if it requires lifting a finger to do so.

This plus I think they truly believe they know better than you.

Last year I flew from EWR and I got a whole berating for trying to list a companion for an upgrade at the gate.
"Why didn't you do it at check-in?"
Uh, because I was running to the gate to catch this flight, which you just delayed. And because I never had an issue doing this at any other gate.

Well, you can go back to the checkin counter to do it.

Meanwhile in FLL and LAX, "let me move people around for you so that your family is all together."

I have a married segment award with the first leg on a partner and the second leg on united.

They're telling me that they can't upgrade just the united flight and they're pricing an entire new business fare with the partner leg which is much more expensive.

Is this true or is it a case of DROPR?

They're ruthless contract workers, if you start explaining plan b to them the station manager will probably just remove you from the list.

Ime the successful way to do it in TLV is to call the 1K line & convince them to move you to the top of the list otherwise make sure you have a good economy seat.

As I've said in the past Plan B is very overrated today. It's very hard to justify the effort only to find out that ur the bottom of an impossibly long upgrade list with clueless gate agents

There should be a disclaimer that the chances of success with plan B are very low if your name isn't Dan
