Click on "United air travel award rules:"
"You may redeem miles for travel in United Global FirstSM, United First®, United Business® or United BusinessFirst® , even if the space is not available. In these cases, United Economy in the same award type must be confirmed, and the front cabin will be waitlisted. For example, a Saver United First award must be confirmed in Saver United Economy to be eligible for waitlisting. If the courtesy waitlist does not clear, it will expire 24 hours before itinerary departure, and you will automatically be added to the airport upgrade standby list upon check-in. In these cases, you will be confirmed on a space-available basis by a United airport representative at the gate once the flight has closed for check-in. For United BusinessFirst and United Business travel awards, the difference in miles will be refunded when the United BusinessFirst or United Business class segment of the trip could not be confirmed. Waitlist requests may only be made over the phone with your local United Reservations office"

Here's a fascinating question: Is flying in business class for a few hours worth all the time, hassle and headache [and points] that plan b, c, d, e, f, g, etc, entail? I mean, it's just a flight.

Flying across the world is one thing, but otherwise, whats the big deal?

As an aside, Zev Wolfson was known to fly coach exclusively.
Do you want your gravestone to say you sat in Economy on a 7 minute flight from EWR to JFK? Didn't think so.
That's what it boils down to.

Or buy a GPU

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately, my round trip is classed as S outbound ewr to TLV, and V inbound TLV to EWR. The only seats open for Instant upgrade with gpu are on the flight listing me as s class. S, I heard is not eligible for gpu.

You can upgrade your fare class to the cheapest available upgradeable fare.

It sounds like Plan B is still working even post dynamic pricing, correct? But how do the phone agents determine the correct amount of miles to deduct?

They still have a base lever for saver award. In other words, they still have internal award charts, they just don't have to publish awards at those rates, they can be below or above.

Got it. Is there any info available on those internal award levels, or should I just assume for now that it would be at the same levels as the old award chart? If I'm transferring in from Chase I would want to have some idea how many miles I need.

Same as old chart, with surcharges for close-in bookings.

Tell him to call support. It was always a HUCA game.

One agent explicitly told me that he talked to support

HUCA? Specify that you're looking to waitlist at the business saver level, not upgrade?

It's within 24 hours, is that possibly the reason?

How would that work? There is no waitlisting T-24. You get out ok the upgrade list. Not waitlisted.
