Only in Israel.

I called the ELAL number here in the US. I was on hold for about 20 minutes until finally an Israeli lady picks up and asks what I need. I tell her I have a flight I wanted to make some changes to. She tells me the office in the US is now closed and that's why the call got transferred to the office in Tel Aviv but it's late and she can't help me until tomorrow.

I ask why. She says angrily "because it's two in the morning!"

Ah, the joys of Israel. Love it.

Same happened to me, she told me I can try back at 10am their time. If I am still awake at 3am I will call, I doubt the hold times will be too long at that hour.

Are you suggesting we all call this lady? Maybe she will cave at some point of the night and just cave to all our demands? Too mean?

So I called, and was transferred from one agent to "An agent who can handle those requests." I requested to have my return flight upgraded to a direct flight, and was put on a ten minute hold. The agent returned and informed me that they have no direct flight availability in early January due to it being just after the Christmas season. I asked what the possibility would be of seats "opening up" and she replied that I could call back, but its highly unlikely. I will call back tomorrow, but it dosent seem like I will be able to switch  :-\

Spoke to El Al this morning.  Excellent service.  The agent switched me from JFK to a non-stop out of EWR.  The non-stop was not available on the date of my return but she offered me any other day for non-stop if my dates were flexible.  (Travel is in January.)
Looks like it depends on which agent you get when calling.
I give major thumbs up for EL Al's customer service.  (I wish US carriers would take some hints.)

Tip when contacting ELAL:

Call the Elal US office and select Hebrew speaking agent which will usually connect you to the tel aviv office.

I called today and was immediate connected to the tel aviv office and agents was very nice,  changed dates on tickets by 4 days.

Good luck

Be careful when calling El Al today as it is already Shabbos in Israel.

Now Shabbos is over already in Eretz Yisroel but if you are in the states, do not call El Al because it is still Shabbos in the USA!  ::)

Obviously, This post is written after Shabbos was over at the location of typing.

When I initially called for the non-stop, they had nothing within 3 days of my return flight. Today I received a voicemail from ELAL inquiring whether I wanted to fly non-stop. I guess they are really trying to push the non-stop flights.

Elal called this AM to ask me to switch my ORD-LHR-TLV trip to JFK direct to TLV. When I asked what about the ORD-JFK leg she said "I don't know, maybe take a taxi" - !

Lol, probably worthwhile if free just to bypass LHR.  Just use Avios.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

With an 21 month old, I feel like I'd rather get off for a few hours halfway there, than flying 2 hours and then ten. Also it's $75pp each way which (with the baby booked in a regular seat) is $450. I'm happy with the $1,260 I paid for 3 RT tickets from ORD. Doesn't need to be another $450 on top plus the 30K Avios to get to JFK.
