Im keeping my 5 hour stopover in zurich and will head into the city for a couple hours.
I have a five hour stopover in london but even though there is an express 15min train to center of london I've been told there is probably not enough time to see anything. I'll probably switch that one to direct.

for london you might be just fine - but you dont have too much time.
its like 35minutes into central london by subway - so you can have time for a few things

Zurich is nice, Madrid is a nice airport, nice lounge, London I did not like the airport. Any way, why pay money to cut out a chance to visit anther country even if only in the airport? Unless you are going through Ukraine then it for sure is worth it.

Another point, you can buy/have insurance on delayed/lost baggage. If you transfer (esp. in London from experience) the chances of luggage not coming all the way with you are much greater so you can do some free shopping after you land... Check the T&C's first.

With such short stopovers I find for me it's not worth it to upgrade direct.

It depends for who and which airport. It can be a fun and interesting experience. If you always fly a lot then maybe you are not interested.

Ok, thanks both of you. You are both right, I will elaborate.

Airports have cool lounges, fun shopping (sometimes), Nemiroff Vodka 1 ltr for 7 Euro (KBP), Museums, Video mail, meet interesting people (frum people also traveling accross the world to/from different continents but intersecting there, people of different culture and language, cool security apparatus :-) and more.

If you have free time - no rush to get to your destination, like such stuff, it may be for you. If not, not. It also depends on how many kids/seniors you are flying with and the timing for jet-lag...

on the other hand they want people to upgrade, do if you upgrade they might decide to allow a change.

Just spoke to an agent.  Said could not change date, but she would let me make changes to one way or both ways.  She also said that I could fly out of ewr but back only to JFK.
