How did you get United to search flights by segment? I've been speaking to them for months, did they have the exact same availability as ANA? Did they search by stopover city or by destination?
United did not have the exact same availability as ANA (perhaps Starnet blocking was in effect the or the agents were too lazy to look more closely)
I initially called United with flights that I had seen available online when I was looking on my Continental account. After I gave her flight numbers, the agent was able to book the open-jaw ticket of JFK-FRA-AMS(on LH) and CDG-YYZ-LGA (on AC). She said I couldn't fly from AMS to CDG and use CDG as a free stop-over because "Star Alliance does not operate non-stop flights between those 2 airports."
I let her put the Trans-Atlantic tickets on hold and hung up the phone, to go to work with the ANA tool myself. I was easily able to find plenty of availability there searching two point-to-point awards of AMS-ZRH and ZRH-CDG. I called United back and gave them my desired flight numbers. Although, they did not have all the flights that ANA had available, they had most of them and a few calls later, I was ready to purchase my finished product.
In the process, the dumbest comment made by a United agent when I was trying to add the stop-over in Paris: "You cant have a stop-over on an open-jaw ticket." Of course, I explained, once she booked the stop-over in Paris it would no longer be an open-jaw.
