i was terribly nervous about driving in israel. although i have been here many times, i have never driven before. most people i asked told me to use google maps and/or waze. i have to say that it has been an absolute pleasure using waze. i downloaded it and tried it out in the USA first and when i got to israel it worked perfectly. as someone else on the forum advised me, by default the driving instructions are given out loud in english (option to change to a bunch of languages) while the actual maps are in hebrew. It has worked well both for long distance and local trips. i don't know anything about the garmin maps and gps for israel - it would be nice if someone could give a review as i had a hard time getting any info on the garmin and therefore did not pursue using it on this trip.

Could anyone enlighten me to the pros of waze? To me Google maps seems so much better.

correct me if i am wrong but i don't believe that google maps gives voice instructions. in addition, i believe that the traffic conditions are more accurate using waze.

i use google maps when i am walking locally.

Well, the new Google maps does have a navigator option with turn by turn voice guidance.
(OT I find it weird that on the navigator it will tell you: In 500 meters... (long pauze)
turn right)

I find Waze to be incredibly slow on BB. It literally take 2-3 minutes to recalculate, and by that time it needs to recalculate again. Cellcom has an app for 10NIS per month, which for me is totally worth the convenience.

On my Samsung Galaxy its much faster than any GPS....

i am using an iphone 4s and Waze is quite fast for me as well. i can't get audio turn directions using google maps on my iphone...

I don't like their UI I find their traffic to be a bit ludicrous often, and turn by turn has been with Gmaps for a while.

A stupid question maybe... I have been using both Waze and Gmaps for turn by turn here in the states, going to Israel in December but worried about inputing addresses in the programs, do you input in hebrew or in english? Like someone says there address is 13 rechov sedot, tel aviv, does it need to be in hebrew? How do the programs deal with the spelling of the names if you don't spell it correctly?

spelling in English can be tricky. every gps spells streets diffrently
