E-Z Pass

I have read the other threads about E-Z pass. I just got dizzy!

BOTTOM LIME: I live out of town and visit New York/ New Jersey several times a year. My state sells E-Z pass, but has a .75/ month fee. I also do not think I get discounts on New York tolls.

What is the best option for me? Which E-Z pass should I get?

As far as i understand from what the other ez-pass threads discuss, NJ has a $1 monthly fee but NY does not.

make sure to add the carpool feature well worth the $1/mo even if youy travel once! (with 3 ppl)

AFAIK there are NY options sans monthly fee, but I don't know if those offer carpool.

I commute daily into NY. The NY EZ-pass has NO fee and DOES have carpool. I check my online EZ-pass account often to see if they indeed give me the carpool rate on the GWB and I have never seen a fee of any kind.

There are 3 different issuers for the EZpass in NY, and 1 (or 2) of them have a $1/month fee.

I just called N.Y. E-Z Pass. They told me that if it is issued by Port Authority, there is a $1 monthly fee. MTA and NY Thruway do not charge the fee.

She told me that it is up to the agency to choose who they take. Meaning, if I apply for the E-Z Pass, they will decide who issues me the E-Z Pass. They might choose P.A., or they might not. She told me that if Port Authority chooses me, I can cancel and reapply and hope one of the others chooses me next time.

Sounds like a crazy system to me!!

I picked one up at a local store in BP for $30 with $30 credit, and it's issued by the MTA.

MA has free EZ passes with no fees.
