MA has free EZ passes with no fees.

But do you get discounts on New York tolls with MA E-Z pass?

There are 3 different issuers for the EZpass in NY, and 1 (or 2) of them have a $1/month fee.
Thanks AsherO! I've been paying the fee for years, I will try to get one from the MTA.

Not sure if this chart is accurate/current, but it definitely seems comprehensive (though not necessarily comprehensible ;))

Cf. Wikipedia's chart.

If I currently have a NY EZpass issued by PANYNJ that charges the $1.00 service fee, it seems like I will have to cancel it, reapply and hope for another agency the next time around. Is this right?

I picked one up at a local store in BP for $30 with $30 credit, and it's issued by the MTA.
Which store?

Thanks. I'll check them out. Have you had any difficulties managing or refilling your account online since purchasing a tag from them?

Yes. the MTA Tag does have the carpool option but it ain't 2 bucks anymore. It went up to $3.50 lst year.
So the carpool option is available on all tags and costs 3.50 regardless of which agency issues your tag?

I just called N.Y. E-Z Pass. They told me that if it is issued by Port Authority, there is a $1 monthly fee. MTA and NY Thruway do not charge the fee.

She told me that it is up to the agency to choose who they take. Meaning, if I apply for the E-Z Pass, they will decide who issues me the E-Z Pass. They might choose P.A., or they might not. She told me that if Port Authority chooses me, I can cancel and reapply and hope one of the others chooses me next time.

Sounds like a crazy system to me!!

Why the annoying font?

My guess is that's if you order it from EZpass directly, but if you order from MTA then you'll get the one without the fees.

Hmm, I guess you're right. Perhaps buying from a retailer is the way to go then.

I'm having a hard time coming to a  conclusion from all the posts. I currently have a NJ EZ-Pass and am living in NJ. I travel often to NYC and I believe there are significant discounts for some of the bridges an tunnels. The GWB, Battery Tunnel, Outerbridge, and Verazzano, are what I use most frequently. Are they any discounts for having NJ EZ-Pass over NY? I use the GSP pretty often. Also will they for sure give you a NY EZ-Pass with a NJ address? Is there a sure way to get through MTA or NY Thruway to avoid monthly fee? Any links?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

AFAIK the only benefit of having a NJ tag over a NY tag is that you save a few cents on GSP tolls during off-peak hours.

The are a few benefits of a NY over NJ. One of them is saving about $4 on the verazzano.

From what I've read here, it seems there is no way to choose which agency will issue your tag when applying by mail/online.

I don't think you can get a NY E-Zpass with a NJ Address.

New toll rates will be in effect at MTA Bridges and Tunnels beginning April 11, 2021. New E-ZPass mid-tier toll rate for improper tag mounting also goes into effect.
