Question re: AMEX OPEN savings at Officemax.com

So with an Amex biz card you get 10% cash back on purchases over $250 at Officemax.com (but not in the store). 

To meet a spending threshold, couldn't someone buy $1000 in gift cards to Office Max online (earning $100 back) and then use the gift cards in a physical store to buy other gift cards (e.g., Amazon, Visa, etc.) 

Perhaps you can't buy other gift cards with Office Max gift cards?  Or perhaps Office Max gift card purchases online don't count (although it's not restricted in the terms and conditions). 

Anyone tried this?
