Passport Question!!
« on: August 15, 2012, 08:15:44 PM »
I am going to Israel for 2 weeks in January (thanks Dan). My passport expires end of Feb, will they give me a problem? I once heard that countries won't allow you in (or the US won't let you leave) if you passport is within 6 months of expiring, is that true?
Thanks

Official policy, but very rarely enforced. Your bigger problem is the airline not allowing you to check in.

I wouldn't take the risk. I know enough people who they wouldn't let check in.

+1, i had a relative who once flew to Europe with a passport that was expiring a month later, they let him leave on the flight, but when he arrived they would not let him through customs, and flew him right back to the us, don't take the chance.

Wow that's crazy!

Yup, he had to go to the NY office, where they could renew the passport overnight, and then bought a last minute ticket to fly the next day.

My bro-in-law had to get a new passport in israel because during passport control in israel, they informed that he wouldnt be allowed to leave the country.

Talk about pre- 9/11 days... I flew to Israel for 3 days of which one of them was Jan. 1 2001, and my passport had been expired for 3-4 months. Didn't realize it until we were landing and filling out the customs forms. Was afraid the Israeli passport control would catch it. Had to get a new passport in East Jerusalem. TWA... those were the days!!!

If you are flying in January there is plenty of time to get it without expediting... why chance it.

I'm going tomorrow to get a passport for my son in NY. The flight will be 11/21. Do I need to expedite the passport or is that enough time?
