Perhaps, but that doesn't make this a good deal if that's the case.  Either way AS is really stingy on award seats for most routes.

There's still a lot of availability from the east coast, but both ways are requiring stopovers which makes this harder, but I definitely saw a report or two that people booked from east coast (I think it may have been BOS?).

you can only do it from the east coast if one of the stopovers is less then 4 hours long. Otherwise u need one leg to begin from the west coast

Which is exactly why this is no deal for east-coasters. And it's a suspect deal even from LAX due to Avios and great AA availability to every island.

If one wanted to make this deal work, and still have a pretty good deal:

Book NYC-LAX/SEA-HNL/OGG, and then HNL/OGG-LAX/SEA and then use avios back...

Yes. that will make it work and itll cost 12500 avios per person extra.

The only other way it can work is if we find a short connection which won't count as a stop. I saw a few in seattle but there is no availability. I'm in no rush as these points don't expire for 4 years.

Another option is the SEA-KOA route Dan mentioned. The problem is that its not showing as bookable because takeoff is 30 minutes after landing in SEA.

I stand corrected. One is allowed one stopover OR one open jaw.

I spoke with a rep that said both would not be a problem as long as destination city matches departure city.

Another rep just told me that this was a mistake.

Everyone flies domestic first from the west coast to HI.  Not something I would burn extra miles for on a 5 hour flight.
If you happen to live in OAK, SAN, or SEA then obviously this is a good deal, otherwise, not so much.
