It is a territory that belongs to the USA but isn’t actually part of the USA.

False. Other than the fact that it's technically a territory and not a state, it is as much part of the United States as Nebraska is.

When it comes to counting countries visited, many would use the ISO-3166-1 standard (here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_population)

The most common list used is the UN's list, followed by that of the Travelers' Century Club. I've never heard of anyone using that Wiki list.

That being said -

IMO these lists here on DDF are very personal and everyone should feel free to classify their travels as they see fit (see my ongoing feud with @Dan re. airport codes for instance ;D). Is St. Martin/Sint Maarten a country? A territory? Or even two countries and/or territories? There is no clear answer. Some would say that since St. Martin is general parlance is not considered being in the Netherlands, it would be its own country, but a place St. Helena would not be. But that line of logic doesn't hold up to a place like Réunion, which is like a billion miles from France and considered 100% France... In any case, let each person decide for himself. No one here is gonna beat @moish, or @Suave, etc. anyways, so it's not a race.

Personally, I don't have any territories on my list yet (although I'll admit that listing Svalbard as a country is a slight stretch). But I will have after my Antarctica trip and so I plan to simply add a section to my list called Territories - I'd put the British Antarctic Territory there for instance, and places like Puerto Rico and American Samoa when I get to them.

And would I put St. Martin in my countries list or territories list? Who knows.

“Under United States law, an unincorporated territory is an area controlled by the United States government which is not part of (i.e., "incorporated" in) the United States. In unincorporated territories, the U.S. Constitution applies only partially.”

It isn’t a “Wikipedia list” but a list by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which makes international standards.

Like you said since nobody is competing for a certain prize, there are no rules on how to do it.

However,  Counting overseas and dependent territories independently while following a reputable list from a respected agency (with 168 member states btw) is definitely a way that makes sense.

Please explain how st Marteen and st Martin aren’t two different territories. I tried but couldn’t find any way to do this

St Helena is an overseas territory so it fits in the same category

What about St. Kits and Nevis 2 countries? one?

One country made out of two islands.

Same for Antigua and Barbuda and Trinidad and Tobago. Other countries are made out of several islands like Indonesia which has the most (I think like 7000), Greece and many (most?) countries on the coast have islands too

Sorry, but Antarctica is not a country, per the international agreement. And the Falklands aren't either. They are part and parcel of the UK. (Or Argie...)

By definition, the last two weeks of your life was mostly spent in Canada, of all places.

Yeah yeah yeah. As discussed numerous times above, this thread is not a politically or scientifically accurate one.

Just be glad I didn't include Chile, even though my passport was stamped into what Chile considers sovereign Chilean ground.
