Whats a Desktop Deal:

There are many factors you need to take into account in order to make something a deal. Manufacturer, Product line, Specs and warranty are usually what to look at when figuring that out. You need to consider prices as well, sometimes you get a price so hot that it doesn't matter what company it is.

Generally speaking here are the guidelines for Intel processors:

i3 8th Gen processor - Under $300 is usually a hot deal, Under $350 is decent
i5 8th Gen Processor - Under $400 is a Usually a Hot Deal
i7 8th Gen Processor - Under $600 is a Usually Hot Deal

to be continued....

What about the Lenovo deal I mentioned earlier? Good deal? I should mention that it is going to be used as part of a domain so 1)no need for a big hard drive 2)I need professional versions of Windows 3)I love the 3 year warranty

is this a good deal?

I feel like for $380 (price with tax) I could do better than an I5 with 4 Gb ram.

the only thing I like about it is its small footprint

I wouldn't count in getting a better deal at this time of year, Q3 is the best time of year to buy computers after holiday season you won't get this for less than 450 if your lucky, probably closer to 550. Adding another 4gb RAM is extremely easy.

I'm looking into purchasing a (fairly) high end desktop, that can be used for video editing. What brands do you experts recommend these days?
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Are there any specifics that you'd lean towards, or avoid?

Just because I do or don't like a brand doesn't mean it's more than just a "mishegas" but if I had to pick I would go with Dell or lenovo

Interesting because I had very poor experience with Lenovo's customer service (with an ideapad), and HP was much better when I used them. Any reason not to go with HP? I've been looking at the HP Envy line.

Besides, if a bunch of people recommend something, even it they say it's a mishegas, it may show something about the brand.

I personally don't like hp so much but please refer back to my previous post. I find that the more I use a brand the more I like it, we used to only use dell and I liked dell best, now we use lenovo alot and I started liking lenovo too. Go figure

love lenovo, they last, and are well built (business and home desktop line, and thinkpads). Never dealt with CS. have had mixed experiences with Dell, (indian CS) and overall 9/10 with HP.
but overall, among the major brands, personal preference is just that, as pointed out by @avromie7
