Whats a Desktop Deal:

There are many factors you need to take into account in order to make something a deal. Manufacturer, Product line, Specs and warranty are usually what to look at when figuring that out. You need to consider prices as well, sometimes you get a price so hot that it doesn't matter what company it is.

Generally speaking here are the guidelines for Intel processors:

i3 8th Gen processor - Under $300 is usually a hot deal, Under $350 is decent
i5 8th Gen Processor - Under $400 is a Usually a Hot Deal
i7 8th Gen Processor - Under $600 is a Usually Hot Deal

to be continued....

A very great deal or rather a no-deal... Almost never such deals (don't forget that an i5 with 16 GB RAM is not the typical combination, and an i7 with 16 GB RAM for sub $500 is sweet dreams...)
If I hadn't found a deal a year ago or two ago, for a Lenovo PC with those specs (well 2 DP vs 2 HDMI) I would tell him to keep dreaming.

Lenovo m710 sff.
7th gen i5
16gb ram
256gb SSD
$497 from lenovo.com

Found option to add 2nd 1tb HDD for $6, Did it.
Also just remembered, had no wifi. WiFi was additional $15 or so.

Only 12GB but still, what do you think?

Solid for the price.

how can I tell if it's a SATA SSD or m2, and how much of an improvement does the m2 offer

It's unclear, from some comments it seems to be "part of the motherboard" which means that it is probably faster than SATA.

But in any case, any normal SSD - even SATA - is very fast and you might never get to those speeds due to other bottlenecks... so either way it is great.

To note: Those Acer computers are always budget devices with specs better than anything else in the price range. That doesn't make it less of a Good Buy, but it is not a steal since they are usually cheap.

Agreed about Acer being cheap. But I literally couldn't find anything close under $700

True true! This is how a good basic modern desktop should be like! (Up-to-date CPU, nice sized SSD, and ample RAM.)

I Bought a Dell Inspiron Desktop:
9th Gen  i5 Processor
Intel® UHD Graphics 630
1TB Hard Drive + 128GB Solid State Drive
12GB Memory

Problem is they sent me a computer with 256gb SSD and no additional hard drive... should i go through the hassle of returning (bought on multiple cards for dell credit) or is there an easy way to just add a 1tb hard drive on my own to give me additional storage space? Will it function smoothly?
I need the SSD to run the programs and computer but need a larger hard drive for other stuff...
Thanks in advance

I got this, it's an M2 SSD, I paid $60 for a 16gb ram and added it instead of the 4gb one, so now I have 24gb ram total

M2 is just the form factor of the SSD. SATA is the type of SSD. You could have a SATA SSD in an M2 form factor although it's less common. Usually M2 SSDs are NVME which are typically faster than SATA but the form factor (2.5 inch vs M2) doesn't determine the type of SSD (SATA vs NVME). Although I don't think they have NVME type SSDs in a 2.5 inch form factor

Not a cross post (Looking for a desktop too)
I need a pretty basic computer that is fast for regular web use and Microsoft apps.
Does anyone have advice as to what i should get? Including screens, keyboards etc. Would ideally like to spend under $500

Looking for a solid desktop for online use, must be fast and able to work smoothly with many tabs running.

Any ideas in the $700 range or so?
