Whats a Desktop Deal:

There are many factors you need to take into account in order to make something a deal. Manufacturer, Product line, Specs and warranty are usually what to look at when figuring that out. You need to consider prices as well, sometimes you get a price so hot that it doesn't matter what company it is.

Generally speaking here are the guidelines for Intel processors:

i3 8th Gen processor - Under $300 is usually a hot deal, Under $350 is decent
i5 8th Gen Processor - Under $400 is a Usually a Hot Deal
i7 8th Gen Processor - Under $600 is a Usually Hot Deal

to be continued....

There are some nice deals. Good is always relative to what you're willing to pay.

This one for $599 is pretty good https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-pavilion-desktop-amd-ryzen-7-16gb-memory-1tb-ssd-natural-silver/6477687.p??skuId=6477687&acampID=0&irclickid=X1ZSB8zYpxyIT3K34FT2OQBMUkA0EtQKQU2f0Y0&irgwc=1&loc=eDealinfo+USA+Inc.&mpid=10577&ref=198&skuId=6477687

On the more basic-decent side of things, this for $399 is good https://deals.dell.com/en-us/productdetail/fl9s

Desktops are cheaper, more customizable and cheaper to repair so if you are okay with a Desktops lack of portability the answer is always desktop over laptop.

If your question is do you need a new desktop on top of your current laptop, only you can decide that. Also, it might depend on what laptop you have and what exactly you'll be doing on the "desktop"

I'll just be using it for excel and internet browsing. I already have a laptop so I'm wondering if there's a need to spend the money on a desktop. My laptop works fine for what I  use it for. I just want a bigger screen

Then just connecting the laptop to a screen should definitely be good for you.

In the worst case you can later but a desktop and use with that screen.

There is no such a thing as "best deal", it's "best deal for me". But for that, you'd need to say what it is that you are looking for (in terms of what usage and what price range.)

anything with an ssd or m2 hard drive and at least 16gig ram should do well for these tasks.

+1 If you aren't getting a tiny one with a laptop processor, even the desktop class Celerons are plenty.

Is anyone familiar with the different Optiplex lines - 3000, 5000, 7000? Are those differences in build quality?

What would you recommend given the choice of a 3000 with 16GB of RAM, or a 5000 with 8GB?

Also, any thoughts on Micro vs SFF?
