thanks ya, evryone (target, best buy, amazon etc) are offering the 4s for bubkas, but what they dont tell u is that u have to have the phone on the line for the 2 yrs (i dont want it on the line for more than 2 minutes :-) plus my wife has unlimited data grandfathered in, but if u upgrade with her line she looses it, this way ill take my moms 100$ upgrade (she has a basic phone) and switch it over to my wifes :-)

So the story with data and voice is as follows.

The iPhone 5 uses a single radio design with a dynamic antenna to avoid battery issues. What that means is that only a single technology can transmit at any given time (1xRTT, 1xEVDO, LTE). The AT&T version is no different, it cannot use LTE and 3G at the same time, but being as 3G on GSM allows for simultaneous voice and data you can still use the internet while on a call.

So yea no simultaneous voice and data on CDMA networks with the iPhone 5 :-/

The explanation for this, it turns out, is complicated. The technology in 4G LTE networks does not currently handle voice transmissions; it only does data. So when you place a phone call on a 4G LTE smartphone, it’s actually rolling back to the carrier’s older second- or third-generation network, according to AnandTech, a Web publication that does deep analysis on hardware.

That means when AT&T customers place a phone call and use data on the iPhone 5, both functions will roll back to AT&T’s older network, which can handle them simultaneously. When you place a phone call while using data in an app with a Verizon or Sprint iPhone 5, it will roll back to their older CDMA networks, which are not capable of simultaneously doing calls and data. And that’s why the iPhone 5 on Verizon and Sprint, despite being a 4G LTE device, will still not do both at the same time.

An Apple spokeswoman, Natalie Kerris, put it this way: “iPhone 5 supports simultaneous voice and data on GSM-based 3G and LTE networks. It is not yet possible to do simultaneous voice and data on networks that use CDMA for voice and LTE for data in a single radio design.”

So why does Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy S III, a 4G LTE phone, juggle calls and data? Samsung added an extra antenna so that it pulls data from the 4G LTE network at the same time that it’s using another antenna to do voice, said Anand Shimpi, editor in chief of AnandTech.

Then why didn’t Apple add another antenna? Its phone already has two antennas in an effort to improve reception, and it would have had to add a third antenna just for Verizon and Sprint phones to give them simultaneous data and calls, Mr. Shimpi explained. Leaving that third antenna out allows Apple to simplify the process of manufacturing the iPhone for multiple carriers. Plus, in the next two years, 4G LTE technology is supposed to evolve to support voice calls, which would render another antenna unnecessary.

So I have a family plan with 5 phones, 2 of which are eligible for upgrades and we were waiting for the iPhone 5. However my dad went to sprint to try to get his line upgraded about 2 weeks ago and they told him if he changes to any other phone whatsoever they will remove the 25% UPS discount from the account.

Anyone know anything about this?

Yea, once you get the phone call up, and they get them to waive the fee.

I got the fee waived with Sprint and Verizon many times

Thanks. I used to do that a lot back in the day, but haven't upgraded my phone in a couple years and thought I heard that Sprint was cutting back on the fee waivers, etc.

+1. Sometimes even more. Don't forget also that if u switch carrier, u will almost for sure incur the $36 per line activation fees... Also the CS in all of those cell phone companies have started to be reluctant to respond positively to threats of quitting especially when relating to apple products...

its 200 - 100$ (primary acct upgrade) - 60$ (i bought an iphone 3gs and it was broken bec i tried jailbreaking it, and verison gave me a 60$ credit for the broken phone) = 40$ for a new iphone 5 preordered...cool no?!

2 yr upgrade.
 from what the guy told me it doesnt happen anymore, but my mom hasnt used it, just had the 100 upgrade but my mom is just a mom no phone is ever good..lol  so i usually used my upgrades for her basic phone and waited to finally strike big and get :-)  (i usually buy from cowboom or online ebay for phones so i dont use upgrades and keep plans grandfathered in
