How Amex treats CC
« on: August 25, 2012, 10:52:40 AM »
I opened a SPG with Amex last month, but I just pulled my credit report and it says the date of opening is 07/2011

Does Amex go by the date you first opened a card with them period?

That is my understanding. Sometimes AU's do get backdated and you have to call to have it done.

Sounds to me like it's a good thing then? Gives me longer history for free on new cards?

Many have been using this trick for over ten years. I guy on CB was doing it for members on his 25-30yr old cards. I think he had over 100 AU's before they shut him down.

Did you mean to say sometimes AU's don't get backdated? I am a little confused by this statement

Yup Amex always puts the first year you had a card with them. In my case my first Amex was in canada and when I transferred they kept the year of my 1st Canadian amex

What I never got straight about this is can I call and get my wife's au card backdated to when I opened the account or it only helps that when she gets her first Amex card she can backdate it to when she was added as an au?

You add someone on as an AU to a card that has a long history. They then get a card in their own name and it will be backdated to the same as the AU card. I have done this for my kids and it works wonders.

But my wife's card says on it by member since when she got added as the au. Does that make a difference?

Yes, that is not good. I said this in a previous post that this does happen where it does not get backdated to the primary card. Reports on CB claim you can call Amex and they will backdate it to the same as your card. Then she can apply for a card on her own and receive the backdated date the same as the AU card.

Is this an advantage for one's credit score, or are there other benefits to having an older date.

Credit score and then when you apply for an Amex you will have an aged account in your own name.

Thanks. So if I mistakenly closed my oldest account, but still have a recently opened Amex that says "member since 2001" (due to a long closed account), will my credit score consider that Amex as having been open since 2001?

the only bad part is that the au has to get along with amex i tried adding a worker who had a shady past as a au and he was declined
while with chase you dont even have to give a social

With Amex also you don't have to give the ssn just that they might link it automatic.

Finally got around to calling. Asked how come my wife's card has a different "member since" than mine. She answered that hers is probably going according to when she got the card as opposed to when account was opened. She then went ahead and offered to send out a new card with the year updated to same one as mine without me even asking  :)

Now just going to wait until that card comes and call in to get her other cards matched to that one. Thanks
