1 Week Cross Country Road Trip
« on: August 27, 2012, 07:43:53 PM »
So my friend is moving to NY and what better way is there to get a car from LA to NY than to roadtrip....

Our (tentative) plans are as follows:

Fly to LA Wednesday or Thursday of this week.
Spend shabbos in LA.
Leave LA for Las vegas Sunday Morning. Spend night.
Leave Vegas for Glenwood Springs, CO Monday Morning. Spend night. (Not sure of this leg as of yet, considered Grand Canyon but too much out of the way).
Leave for Denver Tuesday Morning. Spend afternoon and night.
Leave for Kansas City Wednesday Morning. Spend Night.
Leave for Chicago Thursday Morning. Spend Night.
Leave for Cleveland or Detroit Friday Morning. Spend Shabbos. (Unsure of destination as of yet)
(Leave for Cleveland Saturday Night? Spend night.)
Leave for New York Sunday Morning. Arrive home Sunday Evening. Spend Night ;)

Due to budget constraints, we will be spending most of the nights at friends, family etc. READ: Free. (except for Glenwood Springs)

However, were interested in things to do along the way whether during the day or at night (once we arrive). Nothing too crazy or intense; perhaps just places to check out or stop off by.

(Perhaps we could DO somewhere along the way or at least I can get to meet some of you folks- feel free to pipe in)

Definitely not my style but it sounds like it should work.

I would recommend checking out Bryce Canyon, it's not far out of your way and a lot nicer than the Grand Canyon.

Is this more your style  ;)
My craziest is probably when I stopped off in Miami for Pizza on my way from Satellite Beach, FL to Jacksonville, FL. (back in 2001)

Don't think the point of the grand canyon is it's "nice"ness. More the "grand"ness which i'm sure it beats out Bryce in. that being said, not saying which one makes for a better trip and Bryce is definitely on my list

I would recommend both :)
I would say at the very least drive through Zion on the way to Bryce.
(That drive through (Zion) is absolutely stunning, but to get to all the "attractions" in the park you need to take a shuttle bus)

I realized when I was typing it that "nice" was probably not the best word to use but I didn't think of anything better so I left it.
Maybe it's just me but I wasn't particularly impressed with the Grand Canyon. Sure it's more "grand" than Bryce but IMO Bryce has much more of a "wow factor"

Find that hard to believe but I can't compare as I've only been to one. And yes, it is just you

I don't think the weather the day I was there helped the situation, everything was kinda hazy and washed-up looking -unless that's how it always looks. (picture attached)

The Grand Canyon is basically the same as what you can see elsewhere, just on a bigger scale. Bryce Canyon is unlike anything you've ever seen. (unless you've been to, say, Zion National Park :) )

after doing a bit of research I see that zion is closer to the interstate than bryce. Which is nicer?
We have a long drive from vegas to glenwood springs, co (9 hours direct) and so we cant afford too much of a stopover if we want to be alive for the following days drive.

I've never done anything even remotely close to this, but 1 week cross country sounds a bit tight.

Not at all.
Well, actually, it depends how much you want to do along the way. If you're pretty much driving straight through it's plenty of time.

Or you can even do it with plenty of stops & detours, as long as you don't mind missing a little sleep...
For example, I just did Berkeley CA > Milwaukee WI in 2 1/2 days with plenty of stops and activities along the way.
Alternatively, on a previous trip I left NY on a motzoei Shabbos, didn't stop until hitting SD (late sun night) then spent the rest of the week getting to Cali.
