do u recommend doing the mansions at all? (with a baby)

That's basically what newport is...Mansions. I'd personally definitely do a mansion or 2. but It all depends on what makes you tick.

I'm going to do a Boston-RI trip b'h in mid August, the plan is to leave Tuesday night to Boston staying there over Shabbos & then head to Newport RI sunday morning, I plan to take a tour of the touro shul, check some mansions & do the cliff walk (as much as I can go with a stroller) then leave Sunday night back to Brooklyn.

can I do all this in one day, is it worth staying another day, am I missing out on something?
You can def. make another day worth it on the way back. Consider a Touro synagogue tour, Newport harbor cruise, cliff walk, and a couple of mansions for day 1.
For day 2, consider Mystic aquarium, USS Nautilus submarine and museum, if the USCGS Eagle is in port, it's a great attraction (ask for more info at the Nautilus) and for a relaxing trip home try the Cross Sound car ferry. (New London, CT - Orient Point, N)

Yeah, why not? If you're only being there one day I would recommend the Breakers- it's the most majestic. Don't miss the Astor's Beechwood mansion. It's really nice and unique as they take you back to the 1900s... it's a living history museum.

No strollers allowed in the mansions, IIRC.
More than two mansions will get boring, IMHO.

We (and other couples we saw) used a baby carrier in the mansions. Very worthwhile investment when doing trips with babies.

Same as we did  :)
But some babies are older = heavier, so a carrier is not always an option.

1 day is enough.
a few mansions? Mansion tours can be quite long and may get boring.

I don't know about you, but based on my own experience... I was not able to cover more then 1 mansion a day, it was long and exhausting.. but on the contrary my wife and I really did enjoy the Marble House, the Breakers, the Elms and the Rosecliff, 4 days and 4 mansions, after each we just called it a day..

I don't think 2 days would be overkill at all. More than 2 mansions will probably bore you if your patience is anything like mine.

How does the ferry work? Do you need a reservation or just show up and take the next one?

Nothing set in stone yet, tentative plan so far leave NY in the morning and then leave RI next afternoon.

I never made a reservation the 3 times I took it, (high season- july/august)  never had to wait for the next one

Is there Minyen in Newport Rhode Island these days? If not, what would be the closest Minyen?
Also, looking for a coupon code for a 2 night stay at the Hyatt Regency. WHSALE which is suppose to give me 20% off on 2 nights or more is not working..

TIA
