Best US places to live? (Lubavitch version)
« on: August 31, 2012, 01:19:44 AM »
Where do you think is the best community for a young Lubavitch family and why?

I'll define "community" very loosely as any place with(in driving distance of?) a Lubavitcher cheder (or at the very least a Lubavitch-run day school) and a daily minyan.

There's a nice community of a dozen or so young lubab couples in CLE (Beachwood to be specific).  While there's no lubavitch run cheder I'm not convinced that's a bad thing seeing how so many of them are so poorly run (yes, I'm talking to you in LA, PIT, etc, etc)

Cheap housing, ample parking, and the least crime (practically zero) of any jewish community in the US.  Sure the weather in the winter can be rough (though winter 2011-2012 never showed up) but most of the spring/summer/fall are awesome.  It suits my needs.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Ain't no place that's perfect.

Family, friends, chinuch, kosher etc. etc. are not all gonna come together.

Seems to be a very personal question...

Agreed.
I'm asking about the cities themselves taking the family & friends part out of the equation.

I'm no looking for "perfect," but if you think a certain place is among the best I want to hear why.

I would think there would have to be a massive advantage to a city to move away from friends/family which I'm not sure can be had unless there's a big business opportunity or someone who is going on shlichus.

Its a very personal decision, everyone is gonna feel connected to their place.
TOT (that's one for the abb. Master Thread), wherever one is living, on the most part s/he thinks its the best.

Based on having gone to school there.
And I'm inclined to believe that the OP feels the same about PIT at least...

Chaiken is in Beachwood.

The school (Hebrew Academy) situation is that its a Litvishe school who are very accepting to Chabad, and AFAIK (and IME) there are no problems from the kids to the Chabad kids.
So as long as you take ur child out of the school by 7th / 8th grade or so then i dont think its much of an issue. obviously you want a full Chabad chinuch for your child but from judging all the people that i know of that went there and left by mesivta age or last year of cheder, they came out alright.

A $250K house in Beachwood would pay about $4,000/year.  Is that high?

Beachwood city services are 2nd to none.  Cops are super nice and respond in under 60 seconds, the garbage collectors will take away anything you put on the front lawn and even come on demand if desired, no snow flake on the street or sidewalk is left unpunished, etc.

+1.
And the chinuch is so good that myself and many others I know left from 7th grade strgiht into chabad mesivtas and had no problem adjusting to skipping a year.

Don't think so. Even if it was the same house would be double in New York and you'd pay more
