My Laptop Was Stolen. Anything I Can Do?
« on: September 03, 2012, 10:58:58 PM »
So today was the Labor Day parade in CH, and someone walked into the house I'm staying at on eastern parkway, and stole my laptop. It seems that the cleaning lady didn't properly close the door when she took out the garbage. Whoever was home was upstairs, and when I came back, I found my laptop bag open on the floor next to the door, with the laptop gone. There was some valuable stuff on it. Would the perp be able to bypass the password and get in?

Windows password? Pretty easy to bypass, but these scum wouldn't go through the effort, I don't think. I'm sorry for your loss :'( :'( , please make sure to report it to the media (e.g. CH.info) and file a police report.

I hope they won't go thru the effort. As soon as I discovered it stolen, I went outside where there were tons of police to file a report, and the police told me to call 911! so I told him "but you're here!" so he said that he's busy with the parade... I finally found a captain and he got someone to do it.
is it important to report to ch.info?

Make sure you got/get a report # (to make sure it was actually filed), hope you got the captain's name.

Personally I think it is. Crime in this neighborhood is out of control, we can't just sit idly by while it happens.

How would that help? It would only work if the police would be willing to trace an IP address (which I doubt the lazy NYPD would). Might even be able to subpoena dropbox or something.

I asked for a copy, but he couldn't give me one. I was anyways planning to call them (it's the 77th pct, which is better than the infamous 71st) tomorrow to make sure it was properly filed.

He could monitor logmein to see if his comp ever showed up.

If it did, he could get an IP address, and if he got lucky, delete whatever sensitive info he had on there.

Good thinking.

what will putting it on the media help?

So it doesn't just get swept under the rug.

If it did, he could get an IP address

If he doesn't get cooperation from the NYPD, I'm not sure how helpful that'll be.

I did not have logmein..

Well, there goes that :P

Some laptops come with one year lojack or theft protection but I assume you know if you had that. You can try going to the neighborhood computer stores and tell them tpo let you know if anyone comes in to crack a windows password they should call you. I've had this a few tines in the past and even got one computer back to the rightful owner

Hopefully not. Damn cleaning lady, I'd try and find out if there's any sort of property (on the apartment/house) insurance which covers theft.

I think there are too many computer places in the area to contact. Also, those who care would figure out that there's something fishy going on.

We're working on insurance now, but obviously that doesn't take care of the main concern - the data. Insurance wants a copy of police report, but we just called the pct and they said it takes 3 to 5 days to process it...

Cracking a windows password is a joke (ERD Commander)

I highly doubt that someone who stole the laptop will go to a computer store to have them crack it.

If you bought it on an Amex Plat within a year you should be covered

Damn, can't believe I've never heard of that one... I've had this one on a flash drive for a couple of years.

+1, that's what I've been using, too, which is pretty straightforward. Is ERD better?
