Transferring emails from outlook to outlook. Any free way?
« on: September 10, 2012, 09:17:50 AM »
Just changed Pc, and trying to find a way to transfer emails saved on outlook from old PC to new one.

After searching I came across this site: movemyemail.com which has a paid version. But I believe someone here might have a free way how to do it.

Any input would be appreciated...

you don't need any programs - just copy the .PST file!

Yea, you could backup your old emails and then import them onto the new outlook.

In your "My Documents" folder you should have an Outlook folder where there is a file with a .PST extension. Just transfer that file from your old PC to the new one. Let us know if you can't find it there, it might be in your AppData folder which is hidden.

Its not in the my documents folder, Its in appdata.

Here is the easiest wayto do it.
1) Go to contro panel and open Mail 32Bit (if you don't see that option switch the view on the top right side to "small Icons"

2) Click on "Data Files"

3) on the top right you will see an option Open Folder - click on it

4) Copy all the files in that folder to a USB (or whatever you use to transfer your files)

5) Go to the new computer and start Outlook

6) Do Not setup outlook - click cancel and then start with no email support

7) close outlook

8 ) Repeat steps 1-3 on the new computer

9) Copy all the outlook data from the old computer into the new folder - Overwrite any files with the same name (this will erase any outlook you may have in the new system!!)

10) Open Outlook and setup your email and passwords etc.

11) everything should work perfectly now

It does not have to be in Appdata, like I mentioned earlier. It all depends on the original computer setup (work laptop, etc...)

That's exactly because of that 1% that I mentioned the easier 1st location first... (btw that 1% is more like 100% in the ~thousands employees' company I work for...)

Yes and definitely the most people using outlook are large corporations with thousands of employees. And IME, those IT guys need a fast and efficient way to transfer personal files from one computer to another; and putting everything in My Documents is indeed the fastest and most efficient way to do so...

I'm one of the IT guys. If someone would ask you where word documents are would you tell him the default location (my documents) or would you say - check for a folder called work and in that folder theres a folder called office work year 2045 and in that folder theres a folder called private and you will find all the word documents there....

really??? that must be a very large server to host hundreds of thousands of GB of emails on exchange and not having employees transfer them to their PSTs...

Once again - If you are indeed discussing an exchange environment then most of the time the outlook is put in a manual location! this is irrelevant here - this is a user that cant find his outlook data - the first place to look is the default location! thats always the first place you look for something!

I personally did not first discuss about an exchange environment, you did. Second, your experience with exchange servers might be with small to medium corporations who deal with a couple of hundred employees. As I personally have experience with multiple large corporations having more than 100 thousand employees, the exchange server only allows a couple of hundred MBs on the server itself, while the "rest" needs to be moved to the PSTs. Further, I understand the OPs question which is why I never mentioned exchange before you. I am sure the OP appreciates the help put towards helping him find that PST and I am definitely sure he appreciates having multiple option in hand in case one fails...

We are getting carried away here, My point is you always check the default location first
