Bottom line, it boils down to this:
Only difference I can think of is that 9/11 has always been known and remembered by its date.
That is the reason everyone knows Jul. 4th almost 250 years later but only a real history nerd can tell you what happened on April 14 without Google.

ETA: wow 3 people said the same thing as me as I was typing :-[

Difference being that they were known as the attack on Pearl Harbor, not the 12/7/41 attacks.
People will always know the date of the 9/11 attack.
I was in HI for the 70th anniversary, http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/17957
Maybe we should associate all events by the date.

I think that while both events were different, they both affected the nation as a whole.
There have been many presidential assassinations.  Sure security around the president gets tighter each time, but it doesn't really change people's daily lives.  The nation is mush bigger than any man.

9/11 was entirely different and effected the nation on a much deeper level than a presidential assassination.

CMIIW but weren't there only two?
FTFY
Also not sure I would agree with that notion. A presidential assassination would affect everyone as they now have a new president. (Think LBJ with Vietnam) But 9/11 primarily affected NYC, the Pentagon and the poor people that were on those flights.
Sure as a result of being attacked we engaged in two major wars but is that any different than Pearl Harbor?

Maybe we should associate all events by the date.
Most events center around one attack, WTC bombing, OKC bombing, etc.
9/11 attacks were far more sophisticated and occurred in multiple places, thus the date was used.
