Biggest security change in my lifetime is when metal detectors were installed. They also screened carryon baggage. This had nothing to do with 9/11.
My recollection is that they may have screened carryons, but nothing like they do today.  They just watched everything go through and rarely stopped a bag.

Also the metal detectors were way less sensitive. The same belt buckle I used for years before 9/11 without a bleep started beeping away post.

I get jealous hearing how easy it was to walk people right to their gate and pick them up right off the plane.
Not that it's not doable today but not as easy as it was. I would have enjoyed that.

In 1988 or so, I walked my husband to the gate (only he was flying) and said hello to the pilot as he passed by onto the plane.

On People Express airline we paid ON THE PLANE!  They came around with a manual cc machine, but most people paid cash.

But that doesn't work everywhere. And unfortunately not at my airport.
There has to be a United lounge, correct?

My dad use to take us on the plane and we were not even passengers.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

When I was a young lad in Yeshivah, there were rumors about a certain Bochur who did this as a matter of habit (he didn't get off before the door closed ;) )

When I went to Eretz Yisroel in 1969-1970 I asked to see the Captain and they took me into the cockpit, sat me down and showed me everything that was going on. Try that  today!!

I just did that on a US Airways flight from TLV to PHL. No issue. But even I was surprised. They even let me take pictures which I've been yelled at for doing a couple times.

On southwest airlines they allow kids in and show them around... (after the plane lands)
