Topic Wiki

I have been to Turkey several times. They (Turkish Airlines) are somehow able to consistently be one of the lowest cost and decent airlines.
It is a shame that the country under Erdogan (current leader) does not have better relations with Israel.
I do NOT wear a kippa in Public in Turkey. (I wear a hat/cap)
Even with a hotel for a few nights Turkish Airlines can beat many airlines in terms of price.
I stayed at a decent hotel in Istanbul for about 50$/night.
They have fares to Israel for about 704$ in May of 2015.
Ukraine / Russian airlines are cheaper sometimes but I don't think they are great ..
How does Turkish airlines do it?
The only things I can think of : lower fuel costs? Lower wages? govt subsidies?
The airline is quite ok and Turkey is one of the few Muslim countries that flies to Israel with four or more flights per day on average...
This is not meant to be an Ad for Turk Air....but it is in interesting ::) phenomena....

Thanks for all the informative posts here. Question for the Turkey experts here. Hope you can help me. I will IY”H be arriving in Turkey March 20 in the evening and leave Turkey on the 29th at night.

I was thinking of covering 3 areas:
1)Izmir (jewish sights), Selcuk, Ephesus/Kusadasi and Pamukkale in 3 days
2) Cappadocia 2 days then I have shabes
3) Istanbul 3 days.

Which of these 3 areas should I choose for Shabes? Option 1 fly to Istanbul Friday afternoon, but that only gives me 1.5 days in  Cappadocia and 4 in Istanbul. Option 2 stay in Cappadocia for Shabes and fly motzei to Istanbul. Option 3 When I arrive, instead of going to Izmir I should head to Cappadocia for 2 days. Then to Izmir area and be shabes in Selcuk or Kusadasi and go Motzei to Istanbul (or still can go Friday instead).

What do you think? Thanks.

Thanks for input. I know from your trip report that you stayed in Göreme . Is that the location you recommend? Also, any guides you used in that area that you can recommend?

Thanks.

Our hotel arranged it for us, we went with Turquaz. I'm sure there are cheaper options, but we were happy to pay a bit more and know that we're getting a safe, full service excursion.

BREAKING: Israel's counterterrorism center raises the travel warning to Istanbul to the highest level (4) and says there is an ongoing and growing threat for Iranian attacks against Israeli tourists in Turkey and mainly in Istanbul.

“All Israelis in Istanbul, Turkey, were told to stay in their hotel rooms and lock the doors, per a reported alert issued due to an  immediate threat of Iranian IRGC attack.

Israel’s Channel 12 reported the Mossad believes Iran is planing a significant attacks in Istanbul this weekend and that the Iranian operation is already under way, with attacks possible within hours, including against tourists within their hotel rooms.

Iranian terror cells are "looking for Israelis" on the streets of Istanbul after being given an order to carry out attacks in Turkey, a senior Israeli security official told Ynet on Friday.”

“As the threat of an Iranian attack remains high in Turkey, top officials are also concerned over travel to the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, and Egypt.

Israel has issued a series of repeated harsh warnings to Israeli travelers in recent weeks to avoid visiting Turkey, due to a real and immediate threat of Iranian cells looking to kill or kidnap Israelis.”

Should this thread be renamed?

I'd suggest to at least add good old "Turkey" so that the thread shows up in searches
Jews ≠ Zionists
Palestinians ≠ Hamas
Satmar ≠ SatmarHQ
