Topic Wiki

Starwood points are the highest mileage currency out there. With being able to stay at the Dead Sea for only 3000 points during a week day and only 2000 points on a Friday night they are really awesome. They also have ability to transfer to over 25 different airlines at a 1:1 ratio, but every 20,000 your transfer you get 25,000 (an extra 5,000 for every 20,000 you transfer). Some transfers both names need to match and some only last names. The best is when you can transfer to a different person completely too really make your miles flexible. Also a big problem with these points is that it could take a long time to transfer. So below, we will try to make a chart of, do the names need to match and how long the transfers take.

DATA:

SPG - Transferring from SPG account to another requires the same mailing address on both accounts for at least 30 days. (i.e. this works for spouses). Takes about 5-10 days to transfer.

Aegean -

Aeromexico Club Premier -

Aeroplan - Names don't need to match. - Usually takes about a day and half to 2 days to transfer.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan - First and Last names need to match. - Takes two business days.

Alitalia MilleMiglia -

American Airlines - Only last name needs to match. - Transfer usually takes a day. Sometime can take 2 days if you transfer it late in the day.

Asia Miles

China Eastern

Delta - Transfers post 2 days later - If First and last names dont match then transfer wont go through (Not sure if different first name and same last name works)

Emirates Skywards

Etihad Airways - Last names need to match. Takes about a week to transfer.

Flying Blue- Requested Wednesday, transfer completed following Tuesday (names matched)

JAL - Both names need to match. Can take upto 3 weeks to transfer.

Korean -

LAN Airlines -

Miles and More/LH/Lufthansa - It's been taking forever recently 3-4 days
Last name matching will go through (even if first name doesn't).

Singapore Airlines -

United Airlines -

US Airways - Names don't need to match. - Most transfers go through the next day. Some might take an extra day.

Virgin Atlantic -

Virgin America -

Virgin Australia -

Marge the AA accounts post-facto.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Transfer 60k a day to two AA accounts and merge them, this way you can transfer 120k daily and still get the bonus.

But then don't book tickets for people with different names...

Transfers were initiated last week and did not post yet (first and last names mismatched)

It won't work. 60k is the max per day per AA account...

If you do that, what will happen to the points? Will the transfer be rejected at spg ?

Anyone have experience transferring from SPG to AA? Does it really take the 2-4 weeks that starwood says it does?

Thanks!

Interesting with SPG>Delta.
Shows up in my activity but doesn't post the points with the following message,

20 Sep 2011 Sheraton Hotels & Resorts Activity Date : 16 Sep 2011 0 0

Name on activity does not match name on account

Thanks!

It took almost 2 weeks for me.  Some people have had it less than a week and others much longer so it's really YMMV.

Folks, some of the postings in this thread are a bit dated so just wanted to toss out a question for any recent experience transferring starwood points with different first name/same last name into an AA account?  want to move points from wife and kids into my AA before 12/1.  Only other idea was to open up other spg accounts in my name but with a middle initial or different email addresses and see if that works.  thoughts?

Please CMIIW, I think the SPG account has to be open for 30 days (at the same address) for you to be able to transfer SPG points between accounts.

Asher, you are correct.  I was planning to buy 20,000 Starwood points for the accounts of my wife and 3 kids (there is no 30 day requirement to be a recipient of the gifted points) and from there, I would transfer the points to my AA account, not to my SPG account, hoping that different first name/same last name would do the trick for AA to take their points and put miles into my account.  thoughts on that plan?

Sounds like a good plan, albeit not a cheap one (effectively more than 2.2 cents per AA mile)

yes, i know but with the current discount and the 5k bump in mileage, i think it's my last shot.  think spg would open another account for instance my same first and last name but with added middle initial or middle name, and a different email address?  that would solve any name issues for the AA transfer.  heard of this working?  not working/getting flagged?

I factored both those into my calculation. I have no idea if you'll get flagged or not, I don't have much experience with this stuff.

ugh!  tried to purchase miles as gift for wife's account, didnt' work..computer wouldn't let it go through.  Asher, you were correct, BOTH accounts have to be open for 30 days for transfer between and to purchase for.  I found only in the T&C that buyer had to 30 days open and previous CSR confirmed no requirement to receive.  bummer
