Topic Wiki

Starwood points are the highest mileage currency out there. With being able to stay at the Dead Sea for only 3000 points during a week day and only 2000 points on a Friday night they are really awesome. They also have ability to transfer to over 25 different airlines at a 1:1 ratio, but every 20,000 your transfer you get 25,000 (an extra 5,000 for every 20,000 you transfer). Some transfers both names need to match and some only last names. The best is when you can transfer to a different person completely too really make your miles flexible. Also a big problem with these points is that it could take a long time to transfer. So below, we will try to make a chart of, do the names need to match and how long the transfers take.

DATA:

SPG - Transferring from SPG account to another requires the same mailing address on both accounts for at least 30 days. (i.e. this works for spouses). Takes about 5-10 days to transfer.

Aegean -

Aeromexico Club Premier -

Aeroplan - Names don't need to match. - Usually takes about a day and half to 2 days to transfer.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan - First and Last names need to match. - Takes two business days.

Alitalia MilleMiglia -

American Airlines - Only last name needs to match. - Transfer usually takes a day. Sometime can take 2 days if you transfer it late in the day.

Asia Miles

China Eastern

Delta - Transfers post 2 days later - If First and last names dont match then transfer wont go through (Not sure if different first name and same last name works)

Emirates Skywards

Etihad Airways - Last names need to match. Takes about a week to transfer.

Flying Blue- Requested Wednesday, transfer completed following Tuesday (names matched)

JAL - Both names need to match. Can take upto 3 weeks to transfer.

Korean -

LAN Airlines -

Miles and More/LH/Lufthansa - It's been taking forever recently 3-4 days
Last name matching will go through (even if first name doesn't).

Singapore Airlines -

United Airlines -

US Airways - Names don't need to match. - Most transfers go through the next day. Some might take an extra day.

Virgin Atlantic -

Virgin America -

Virgin Australia -

Are SPG points transferable between members? Can you "gift" your points to someone else who is an SPG member?

Starwood Starpoints Transfer To Airline Miles Master Thread
« Reply #4 on: August 23, 2010, 10:22:23 PM »
Although when you call Starwood they'll say that transferring points into an airline takes up to 14 days, experience has shown that the actual time it takes for the miles to post is relatively much shorter than that.
Now the question: Anyone know forsure how exactly it goes down? Are there any specific days that the points get moved over? Any rules of thumb?
In my case, I'm looking to move over a small amount of SPG points (about 2500) from my account into my wife's AA account (Yes, we have the same address on file). I need the miles to post ASAP.
Any replies with that info will be greatly appreciatted (time is of essence).
Thank you.

I would say it takes place sometime during the other 1,438 minutes of the day.

Dan,
Maybe we should start a master thread where members can post after any Starwood transfer they do what date it was intiated and what date it posted and to which FFP, this can be used as a good data point to get an idea of the tranfer time.
There is a similar thread on FT here;

Post here with:
-When you initiated the Starpoints transfer.
-Which airline you transferred to.
-When the miles reached the airline account.
-If you transferred to an airline account with a different name or a matching name than the Starwood account.

I transferred points to AA on a Friday in June for the 20K SPG: 33,750 AA promo and the base AA points posted on Monday, 3 days after transferring.

This a repost from another thread;
Transfer from SPG-ANA
I did it on Friday Chol Hamoed 4/2 and noticed the points in my account motzie Y"T 4/7 (I didnt think to check on Sunday) on ANA it showed the transaction date as 4/2 but I am not sure what that means...
then I did another 2 transfers, 1 on 4/4 and one on 4/7 and they both posted together on Monday 4/12.
Seems like they may also process over the weekend to post on Monday.

About a year ago I converted 2500 to 1250 United miles to top off my account.  Not only was the conversion ratio bad, it took 2-3 weeks to post.  I think the flowers I bought from the mileage plus mall posted faster.

I have had success similar to others with AA (about a few days).

If I want to tranfer some of my spg to my kids aa accounts to top them off, do I have to create an spg for each of them to transfer, or can I go directly from my spg to their aa?

Create an SPG account for each of them and transfer first from your SPG to theirs and then to their AA.
It only takes a few minutes to create an account

It normally shows up on monday, so it does not matter when you transfer. From monday until sunday, it will always show up the next monday. Thats with most airlines like this. I have the feeling spg gives the credit information, oncw a week on sunday night to all airlines and they credit them the next day.

I transfered allready to a diffrent first name within the same family name and it was no problem. That was with lh. I dont think spg cares, they just say it has to match, so that no airline will make a fuss later. If you dont transfer a huge amount, it should go through no problem
