Topic Wiki

Starwood points are the highest mileage currency out there. With being able to stay at the Dead Sea for only 3000 points during a week day and only 2000 points on a Friday night they are really awesome. They also have ability to transfer to over 25 different airlines at a 1:1 ratio, but every 20,000 your transfer you get 25,000 (an extra 5,000 for every 20,000 you transfer). Some transfers both names need to match and some only last names. The best is when you can transfer to a different person completely too really make your miles flexible. Also a big problem with these points is that it could take a long time to transfer. So below, we will try to make a chart of, do the names need to match and how long the transfers take.

DATA:

SPG - Transferring from SPG account to another requires the same mailing address on both accounts for at least 30 days. (i.e. this works for spouses). Takes about 5-10 days to transfer.

Aegean -

Aeromexico Club Premier -

Aeroplan - Names don't need to match. - Usually takes about a day and half to 2 days to transfer.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan - First and Last names need to match. - Takes two business days.

Alitalia MilleMiglia -

American Airlines - Only last name needs to match. - Transfer usually takes a day. Sometime can take 2 days if you transfer it late in the day.

Asia Miles

China Eastern

Delta - Transfers post 2 days later - If First and last names dont match then transfer wont go through (Not sure if different first name and same last name works)

Emirates Skywards

Etihad Airways - Last names need to match. Takes about a week to transfer.

Flying Blue- Requested Wednesday, transfer completed following Tuesday (names matched)

JAL - Both names need to match. Can take upto 3 weeks to transfer.

Korean -

LAN Airlines -

Miles and More/LH/Lufthansa - It's been taking forever recently 3-4 days
Last name matching will go through (even if first name doesn't).

Singapore Airlines -

United Airlines -

US Airways - Names don't need to match. - Most transfers go through the next day. Some might take an extra day.

Virgin Atlantic -

Virgin America -

Virgin Australia -

Initiated two transfers to Alaska on Sunday night (one over the phone and one online) both posted Wednesday night almost exactly 72 hours later.
Do you remember the exact dates?

I just messed up and am wondering if someone can help me.

Right now, I have around 25K in United Miles as I need to go to Israel on Wednesday. My plan was to transfer another 20 (25K) from my SPG account. However, I accidentally connected my son's AU card's spg number and now his account is showing 0 points and I cannot access my Amex points through SPG. I tried calling CS, but the department I needed wasn't open; I also tried chatting, but to no avail.

I can merge the account, but this would take too long as I want the miles by Wed. Alternatively, I can change the number, but this would take over 24 hours.

Does anyone have any advice or ideas?

Thanks

1) 20K SPG wont get you 25K UA, as its a 2:1 transfer.

2) SPG transfer isn't instant and they wont post on time.

3) UR transfers to UA (usually) instantly. A lot of time on Sat night, you wont be able to transfer or they wont post till sometime in the middle of the week.

@Meir613

Thanks. So do you have any advice.... I made a mistake in the previous post and actually have 50000 United Miles. I also have a lot of Amex miles from my BGR/Platinum.

Previously, I have seen flights with United open up last minute, but I would prefer not to risk it--need to make it for a wedding.

What do you recommend? I am looking for a flight on Wed. afternoon.

KLM (Flying blue) has a flight for 50K and $200 in premium economy. The question is: Do I wait for something better? What's your experience with these things?

Again, I am looking for a flight from NYC to Tel Aviv on 10/2, business or economy.

Which airline should I expect something to open up with? Is it risking it as I only have 50K united miles?

Are there are any other airlines that I should be checking? Last time I did this, Singapore and BA didn't have anything....

Maybe he sees that there is room on the flights this week but availability is still locked until a little closer to the date.

maybe--- but --if it is so important to be at the wedding-- book now --- if can not get biz today --that leaves only 9/30  & 10/1 for any hope of biz ( assuming not going to make reservation on day of flight )-- and will eco still be offered ????

maybe book eco now and if biz opens pay the change fee--if same airline

Even if he waits till the last minute for award biz seat to open up - and it doesn't, and by than the award economy seat is also gone, he could just pay for a revenue economy seat and monetize his miles and points which would usually get him more than the price of a paid ticket, in addition to earning elite qualifying miles for it.
So no risk in waiting for a biz seat to open up, so why risk paying a change fee(assuming it'll be with same airline)?

But I know you're not into these things  ;)

True ----I never think in terms of selling as that is not my thing  ---- when I read  "I need to go to Israel on Wednesday" I take it as NEED TO! -- ur point of selling to cover cost is probably the sure way to get to Israel on time  with some money in the pocket

I transferred some SPG points to BA on 10/12/13 to take advantage of BA's 25% bonus (plus SPG's 25% bonus) which was in effect through 10/15/13. Starwood shows my SPG points being taken out of my account on 10/12, but they still haven't shown up in my Avios account.  When they eventually do arrive in my Avios account, can expect to still get the Avios bonus which ended on 10/15?

thx

I initiated a transfer of 30k starpoints to M&M Lufthansa 30 days ago (both my accounts). I wanted to book a flight yesterday and the points were not there. I can't book that flight any longer.

I chatted with an SPG rep to try to see where my points are. She told me 3 different pieces of information that contradicted each other.
1. First she told me that the transfer can take 12 weeks.
2. When I pressed her, she changed to 10-20 business days.
3. When I told her that it was 21 business days, she said that her supervisor just said 30 days.

I then wanted to confirm with her which one was correct, 12 weeks, 10- 20 business days or 30 days to which she just responded - "My manager says 30 days" and then she ended the chat. I found that to be extremely rude and unprofessional.
Additionally, no one can tell me where the points are.

I wrote an email to SPG to express my complaints. Any idea what I should expect?
