I like bright yellow, smooth, medium, round on top (crown) with no pitom.

I know large is more mehudar, but I rather a size which works better for mivtzoim. Also try holding a massive Esrog while trying to turn the page during Hoshanos, while being pushed from all directions.

See here (כידוע ומפורסם)
I know what's ידוע ומפורסם. Knowing that the Rebbe took a large one, to me is enough. Was just wondering if there was a source in Seforim as well, that's why I asked.

Any tips on how to keep an esrog fresh?

I don't plan to use it next year (it's a shaalah if it's muttar). But my son is iyH learning Mesechtas Sukkah later this year and I want to preserve my esrog so he can bring it to class in a bunch of months. Should I keep it in plastic? In the fridge?

Any tips are appreciated.

ANywhere airtight. Less O2 the better.even vacuum packed can still go if there is internal mold.

I remember my brother did that years ago. But within minutes from when he opened it, it was rotten and smelly. Anyone have experience with this? (I want him to be able to bring it in and cut it open, etc.)

I can put it in a ziplock back and suck out the air. Or a ball jar, if that is recommended. Should I keep it in the fridge?

My guess is the condensate in a fridge will make it worse.

If it would defrost well, consider freezing it?

I like the idea of doing an extra mitzvah (talmud torah) with the esrog.

Email Rabbi Berkovits. (You probably won't get an answer but make sure to mention kids and Talmud Torah and see.) PM me for it or google?
He somehow manages to produce a bright orange esrog every year during his Shovevim shiur (to show everyone "yarok k'esrog").

We freeze our esrog until TU B'Shvat and make esrog eingemachtz (compote) with it. Another option I've seen used is keeping it in a container of water.
