If you have Amex Bus Platinum, and you are buying a ticket for a flight on the airline that you chose to get the $200 credit, you will recieve a 35% rebate on the points that you used (takes a few weeks)

I booked an award ticket from ORD-ZRH with UA and was going to book the return ticket when an award ticket becomes available from ZRH-ORD. But now I would like to take advantage of a free stopover in Europe so do I have to cancel my flight and rebook a round trip in order to get the free stopover or can they piece together two one ways?

U might have to HUCA but they should be able to do it.

First add the return and then separately add the middle leg, it should reprice as zero extra miles.

NO, call United to first add a return on the same trip and then add the middle leg.
You dont want to fust add a middle leg and pay for it.

This says it applies only to involuntary refunds. I read that to mean United will no longer force a refund on you based on only a 2 hour change. That does, in fact give them more rebooking options. Looking at their site, it still seems refunds will be given if requested
