FWIW I recall reading that it can only be used for award taxes/fees if the flights are UA metal.

Interesting. I did a dummy award booking a while ago and I did not see the option. It would make the $200 plat credit much more useful.

Just wondering any one know if it's an issue to book multiple award flights from same account, for example for a family member and a friend?

I have premier silver status and have star alliance gold with a different airline. I have a upcoming TLV-EWR flight with united, is there any possability to choose economy plus seats before checkin? Does star alliance gold status give any upgrade benefits?

According to there website you only get the economy+ option at checkin.

I have seen an option in the past from United to transfer points between accounts for a fee wich was almost more than the points are worth so not sure its worth it.

No issue (so long as you don't have a pattern of booking lots of tickets for random people that have no connection to you)

I need 20k united miles for a upgrade, whats the best way to get them? I have access to chase points but not under the same name. Transfering from one united account to another seems highly expensive.
