I sponsored an upgrade using my GPUs for a round-trip flight that was supposed to take place this month.  The GPUs cleared and all legs were confirmed upgraded.

The trip was cancelled but I have not seen the GPUs redeposited to my account.

Then I read this on the United website:

So if the upgrade was confirmed when requested, it is still considered used if the flight is cancelled?

Call them?

In order to get the first bag free on a United flight, according to the description of the benefit, you need to have bought the ticket with your Mileage Plus Explorer Card. Does anybody have experience getting the free baggage by showing their card, without having bought the ticket with the card?

I was going to ask this same question!
I just bought UA tickets using MR BP hybrid points. Any way to get free first checked bag, since I have (but did not use) the UA MP CC, or otherwise?

yes many times!
At the time I was an AU on the presidential card
That gave me 2/3 free bags.
I would always tell them I forgot to use this card..
This was my experience

thanks! So I'm sure it's YMMV. But it never hurts to smile and ask nicely. :)

IME (one time only) they wouldn't budge, and since ticket wasn't purchased with United card (had Club card at the time) they wouldn't allow the free luggage.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Thanks, sounds like YMMV.  We'll probably just do carry-ons and avoid the issue. I'll post in "what award flight did you just book" with the details.

It was sometime last year. Flight to TLV, wouldn't allow 2nd free checked bag despite having United Club CC, since ticket wasn't paid for with it.

I guess it really is YMMV. I used it on a EWR-TLV flight

ETA; I found for $93 a one way paid flight which I think I will beh take!
Wish I can book on ba, I have so many avios sitting not knowing what to do with them!

Below in the picture you can see this united flight is operated by air Canada! Will I still be able to get a free bag as I'm booking through united while having the mileage Explorer card? And is it like that always when they fly on another carrier you can't choose online your seats unless I go on air Canada's website or call?
 Thanks

This is not a united flight operated by AC. It's an AC flight with a UA flight number.

No free bags.

Interesting!
And then they have the ability to charge 12.5k for the flight?!? Wonder if it's the same amount on AC website?
