best reward card for 30k monthly spending??
« on: September 23, 2012, 10:45:08 PM »
I have an LLC in my name and I'm the sole owner. I 'm able to use my personal card for business expenses so long as I keep receipts...yada yada yada.
I currently have a AmEx PR Gold Card (not a business card) but i'm not feeling all that loved...I spend upwards of $30k a month - on my Amex alone - but the points just dont seem to show me all that much love. 2x for gas and groceries, 3x for travel, but the rest of my expenses ($19k) are business supplies (construction). That's a large bulk that's getting shoddy pointage.
Which card would bring the best bang for each buck?! I feel like I'm losing out - and I'm pretty sure i am.
(as a side note, my credit is stellar and have never paid past due and I've got a lengthy history. I'm just slow with the point system :))

Off the bat, SPG or Sapphire would be the way to go.
For office supplies use the Ink Bold card.

Chk out the thread for s/o who had to make a million dollar purchase for his shul. If you ignore all of the self righteous discussion about its worthiness, I think you'll find some discussion of this sort of question.

If you are buying in Home Depot /Lowes and purchasing online, You might want to ise a saphhire/ink/freedom with the UR Mall. Otherwise SPG is nice.

Bonus categories aside, get the United Club Card for 1.5 miles per $

Your decision also hinges on whether you will use the points, gift them, or sell them.
UR and MR are the easiest to sell.

Why not get cash:

http://www.usbank.com/credit-cards/cash-plus-signature.html

Earn 5% Cash Back on two categories that you choose, like home improvement stores or airline tickets.
Earn 2% Cash Back on gas, groceries or drug stores – choose one
Earn 1% Cash Back on everything else.

Thank you all BUT this message was sent to me last night:

"On regular spend you won't get more points than what you described on your post. However, you can get more valuable points for the same exact spend."

So where can i get the more valuable points? Last night i sent in apps for amex spg but i'm not sure which chase cards to go after. I was told sapphire/ink/freedom but am I supposed to use all three? I'm trying to keep it uncomplicated. I want good pointage but not multiple cards if I can hep it. Majority of expenses are at HomeDepot. (Basically, whether or not i apply I have these expenses. So which CARD, not cards, will bring me the most beneficial usable points? Points will be use for travel - I dont anticipate selling them but hey, you never know)

On a second note, what the heck is the difference between BofA "worldpoints" and amex points? Are they more valuable??? (Gosh, i'm so ignorant with this stuff!)

Does Fidelity still have their 2% cb card?

Cash back is not always using a cash back card. A wise person/s here showed the great benefit is selling UR points (I have more points than I would ever use)!

Hmm, 2% is better than the amt that UR can be sold for.
Are they as strict as Citi w/ coding things as cash advances?
I assume 2/3 bm's are impossible?

Freedom 1.1 UR+10 sells for more than 2% as does 1.5 UA.  Both can obviously be used yourself for way more value than that.

Aside from bonus categories, that's the key, IMHO.

Every dollar one spends on a credit card must be viewed against its opportunity cost. In other words, every dollar you put on any CC besides a 2% CB card (a la Fidelity) must be viewed against the fact that you are foregoing 2% cash back. That calculus makes sense when spending in bonus categories (a la dining on CSP) or when using the accrued miles for premium cabin travel. Both cases one can very easily surpass 2% cash back.

...but buying GC's at OD (5pts/$) and using them for spend. Now how much are my UR points worth?  :)
I only have the Amex and no CA fee buying Amex GC's via BC. Not sure on anything else.

Obviously.
I'm referring to other types of spends, AP and Serve first come to mind, that don't fit into any of the bonus categories.

And 1.5 UA, since it's risky to sell, may not make the most sense for some ppl. For example, s/o like you Dan, with a few million UA miles, at this point is the 1.5 UA worth more than 2% even though you wouldn't risk selling them? I would guess so if you plan on burning through yours in the upcoming years, but for most ppl, it would take them a while to burn through even 500k UA, so the upfront cash may make more sense.
But to each their own.
