3 Days In Canada, Sprint Vs. VZW
« on: September 24, 2012, 01:24:12 PM »
All numbers pro-rated.

Sprint:
I used to have to call in to add a Canada Roaming plan that would cost 30 cents and would lower the price of calls to 20 cents/minute.
Data is $30 for 55MB.
Once done I would have to call back in to turn off Canada and then fight for literally weeks on end to get back my grandfathered unlimited data.
Texting was able to stay unlimited.

Cost for 25 minutes daytime+25 minutes nighttime+50MB data+50 texts=$40.30.

Verizon:
A 4 minute phone call and I was set up with a plan that would automatically revert to my old plan without having to call back in.
They switched my add-a-line plan to it's own Canada plan that included 44 minutes of daytime calling and unlimited nighttime for $1.50 for 3 days.
They changed my texting plan to one that included 129 texts for 97 cents for 3 days.
They changed my data plan to one that included 10MB for $1.89 for 3 days plus $25 for an extra 100MB.

Cost for 25 minutes daytime+25 minutes nighttime+50MB data+50 texts=$29.36

The nice thing about VZW was that everything went back automatically, including my unlimited grandfathered data, and the bill didn't get messed up at all.
With Sprint I'd still be fighting a month later about the bill and my old plan.

i have sprint and roam in canada...while they still mess up the bills...calls are only 20 cents per minute and texts have no additional fee.

cost of the canada roaming pack as they call it is $3 per month and they pro rate it.

Adding the canada call package doesn't mess things up as much as changing your data package IME.

Right, as I said 30 cents for 3 days for Sprint and no texting fee.

Of course VZW texting was actually free for my wife as I didn't add the Canada plan to her phone and the regular VZW plan includes Canada texting, but it was $1 extra with the Canada plan.

Would the Sprint method be  a possible way to get a new phone on a free and clear plan? Basically call to add a Canada plan, then activate the upgraded phone (will it work?) then when you get back fight for a few weeks to get the grandfathered free and clear plan back on.

So why did you have to add a texting plan?
Because I changed my plan to a Canada calling plan which requires a separate texting plan, hence the .97 charge.
VZW does not charge you for your regular plan (which for me included the unlimited texting) while in Canada.

I always add Canada roaming to my plan, $3 prorated, before i go to Canada. Comes out to 20 cents a minute but the good part is that those minutes aren't counted towards anytime minutes. The only annoying part is that sprint always has to transfer you to the International department to do it which can take long. Also I'm on the sero plan and it never messed it up...

I do it online with international chat. It doesn't usually take more than a few minutes.

I just call the Sprint international desk, no wait times and quick service

WOW!  And here the only reason I haven't switched to Verizon is because of Canada roaming.  The idiot in the store told me there is nothing I can do to help me with all these charges while I am in Canada.
One side note:  Nowadays Sprint can have it set up to come off on a certain date if you make that request to the international department.  It only happens one out of 4 times though.

Now, how can I cancel sprint without paying hefty cancellation fees?

Complain enough. Tell them you're unhappy. Just keep calling until they agree.

The VZW international rep was a pleasure, he was so competent and quick.  A world of difference from my Sprint days.

I know exactly what you mean!  I travel to Canada about 5 times a year and have to deal with this garbage everytime!

One question, what about for 2 lines?

Would be the same story, a temp switch to the Canada plan for as long as you set it.

I go to Canada often, and get the "Reduced Canadian Roaming Plan". Don't Chas V'shalom mmistake me for supporting Sprint, but you can set it up so it should last for a specific number of days. Also, Sprints service has definetly seen a significant improvement.
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.
